University Taqueria — Restaurant in Berkeley

I have been wanting to go here for so long after seeing all the amazing pictures of their food. Today I finally made that happen and I was not disappointed. I placed my order with Lupe and she was very friendly and helpful considering I placed a large 4 person order right as they opened. After about 10-15 minutes she comes out with two bags packed with food. I was so impressed with the quantity of food they provide for very affordable prices. But the wow doesn't stop there. Me and my friends open our boxed up food and there is mounds of fries, like a literal mound. Their french fries are some of the best I have ever had. Perfection! We are all so blown away by the quality of food El Pollo Picante offers and we haven't even got to the main course. Two of my friends got the spicy chicken wrap and me and another friend got the double spicy chicken sandwhich. The wraps are basically super burritos stuffed with crispy chopped chicken. And don't get it confused that there is a bunch of filler and then a few pieces of chicken here and there. This thing is STUFFED with chicken. Then you have the double chicken sandwhich. Where do I start?!? The fresh brioche bun that still has flour on the bottom, or the massive fresh crispy chicken strips, or their homemade spicy sauce. This Mexican restaurant is one of my favorites. I usually go for the seafood tacos, and this time I tried one fish taco and one shrimp taco. The restaurant is conveniently located in the heart of the University of California, Berkeley. The cashier was very helpful, and the food was ready incredibly fast, which was a nice surprise. Both tacos were delicious, with fresh ingredients and great flavor.

However, I was a bit disappointed by the size of the tacos. They were noticeably smaller compared to other fish tacos I’ve had at different places. While the taste was excellent, I was hoping for a bit more substance, especially considering the price. Y’all…you know how hard it is to stick to your meal plan when El Pollo Picante is legit down the street from you? REALLY HARD. The sandwich, is my absolute FAVE. My kids usually go for the tenders and Mac & cheese….and let me tell ya…if a 7 yr old can handle a little heat on the chicken…than an adult has no business complaining about the spice level lol. It’s perfect. If ya got lame tastebuds just say so hah. The honey adds a nice sweet kick which my teenager loves.
