Hubs and I had a date night to see a show at the Cabot Theater just down the street, so we made reservations for dinner here at Soma. We arrived and were seated promptly on time in a cozy booth next to the windows so we could people-watch too :) (of note, it is quite dark in there!)
Our server, Liz, was a well-trained server who knew the importance of prompt, efficient service on a show night! She started us off with complimentary bread and housemade hummus, and O M G. This was the smoothest, creamiest hummus I have EVER tasted! It was seasoned to perfection; after a couple of bites, I thought it might need a bit more salt or lemon but then changed my mind. Even when the bread was gone, I scooped and scraped the last bits with the cute mini spoon they provided! Whew, all that for something complimentary! It gave me great hopes for the rest of the meal!
Drinks: hubs had a beer, and I started with the cucumber Cosmo, nice twist but too sweet; I switched to dirty martinis, and those were bangin'!
Dinner: we opted to share two small pizzas, thinking they were like personal pan-sized- HA, we would have been okay ordering one! We chose the mushroom and sausage and then the garlic shrimp. Both came out timely and hot! The shrimp was cooked perfectly, and the lovely essence of garlic with the fondita cheese was divine. The broccolini was a huge hit as well, tender but still had some bite to it. Some roasted garlic on top would have put this pizza in the top 1 or 2 pizzas I have ever had! The pizza crust was chewy, crusty, and not limp at all! The mushroom pizza was okay in my book; the mushrooms tasted off to me, but to be honest, it is a hit or miss with me and mushrooms! Hubs enjoyed it very much. There might have been a little too much sauce, and the wilted spinach on top was not needed, but it added a nice presentation.
We, of course, could not finish both, which is a shame because we ubered and there was nowhere to store the leftovers :(
Overall, it was a wonderful experience at Soma, and we...
Read moreHungry as hell and needed a few cocktails with the lady. Came in at 930 and there weren't many people there. Many empty tables. We stood around waiting for about five minutes to be seated - the hostess ignoring our precense. So we decide to sit at a high top near the bar. Waitresses walk by, I'm locking eyes with the hostess who has been ignoring us since we walked in, and also got the attention of the bartender who gave me the "hold on a second" pointer finger. So we are talking and I say "we've been here for 20 minutes and no one has come to even ask us for drinks." So I went up to the hostess and said "hey can we please have some service?" She responds yes right away, sorry didn't see you there! I laughed because we were sitting literally 8 feet away from her and with my large eyebrows it is quite easy to tell if I am trying to get your attention. So after another ten minutes a nice waitress asks us what we want to drink. We put in orders and it took about 15 minutes to get out drinks. Finally the waitress comes with our drinks and hands us menus. She then states "so we only have pizza now because it is past 10:00." I said "miss, we have been here for 35 minutes and after about 20 I had to walk up to the hostess and ask for service." She apologized and stood over us with her pen out waiting for us to give her the order on the spot. I got upset at the pitiful service and wanted to leave but the wife was hungry. We had our mediocre pizza and mediocre over priced drinks and said "well that's never happening again." Clearly they didn't care as they were more focused on counting tips or whatever slackers do while people wait patiently in an...
Read moreWent here tonight for my girlfriend’s birthday as it’s her favorite place. We had a reservation and it was definitely busy. But we waited 10-15 minutes for water and drink orders to be placed and another ten to get them. We also placed our food order at the same time as we had plenty of time to look.
After that we saw our waitress exactly twice. Once she asked how my pizza was and when I said ‘it’s good but…’ ‘great!’ And on to the next table. When I was cut off I was going to ask for another couple drinks for my girlfriend and myself. But I guess we just only get the one and then room temperature warm water the rest of the night. And the final time when she asked if she could get us some boxes (I had just grabbed another slice but agreed a box would be well timed as I didn’t wanna be there anymore.)
I’ve never tipped less 20% in my life but tonight was a first. The table next to us felt the same. The waitress did finally ask us if there was anything else while I was boxing our food up (without silverware because she already had scooped everything up when she dropped the check) but as we already had boxes and she had already my card I’m not sure what she would’ve gave us.
We then left and the two workers at the hostess station didn’t say a word.
I used to take care of the owners dogs for doggy depot some time ago and always told him how this was our spot anytime we went out with family or special nights like tonight. We will have to find another downtown restaurant to go to for awhile. Definitely not sinking more...
