06/06/2019 Update: I just ate here again last night 06/06/19. I was so disappointed, I had to come back and update this review. The food was all cold, stale, and I ended up throwing up not once but, 6 times after eating the sashimi. They eliminated crab, but kept the high price tag for the buffet. I got a piece of house chicken that was freezing cold, even internally. I'm shocked. They've wasted money on redecorating but, the food is inedible, unless you want food poisoning. I used to tell people this was the best Chinese Buffet in North Dakota, now I have to tell everyone it was the worst downhill fall and not to go there. So sad, I looked forward to eating here when visiting Bismarck. No more, stay away.
This is hands down, my favorite Chinese restaurant in North Dakota. I've been to many Chinese as well as sushi places, including all the major cities in ND, and several in other states. I love sushi, and I think people overlook it here, sadly, so I'm going to review it first. The sashimi here and much of the sushi, is close to comparable to the local sushi restaurants. This is an awesome place to "try" sushi without the expense of going to a sushi place, and you can just eat Chinese if you don't care for it after. So the cool part of getting it at China Star is it's all you can eat, so you save not having to pay ridiculous prices by the piece of by the roll, and you can avoid the pretentious attitude, and rude service you get at the popular strip mall sushi place in Bismarck. Plus... You get to have Chinese food too, making it totally worth the extra price! If you go during dinner they have awesome crab legs, this also pays for itself if you like them. The selection of actual Chinese food here is the best in the state, and is mostly well replenished. I go here when I'm in town, as often as I can. It's the only Chinese place I recommend...
Read moreI rarely ever leave written reviews, but if I can prevent some poor soul from wasting their money on this over-priced place, I will. The only reason I give this place one star is because the people were nice. But that is the only positive thought I can give. The food was horrible. The sushi tasted like it had been made the day before and was left out until I put it on my plate. Dry rice, warm fish sashimi isn't supposed to be warm). I thought I would fare better with the standard Chinese food they have on offer. But even that was subpar, and greasy even by Chinese food standards. The staff, while nice people, we're not very good at their jobs. The couple in front of me came to their table and saw that I had not been wiped down and when they requested to have it cleaned, the lady leading them to their table pulled a few napkins out of the napkin box and wiped it off. At the end of the day, they double charged me. They corrected it, The refund will take three to five business days to take effect. It's not going to break my bank, but it is irritating that I'd have to do that for a simple Chinese meal. For $16.50 for a drink and meal, I feel like I was cheated just a little bit. I don't mind paying that much for a Chinese buffet, but it has to be better than what I encountered last night at this restaurant. hopefully the owners of this restaurant will read this, and make the corrections necessary to make this...
Read moreToday my wife, son, and I tried out China Star for the first time after living in the area for the last five years. We figured we would give it a try since we hadn't had Chinese food in a while. Overall, the food, service and atmosphere were pretty good. The one-star rating is being given because my young son, who is a picky eater, was also charged the full adult price. I asked our waitress about this when we received our check. She said that everyone got charged the $9.99 price on Sunday. We thought this was odd, because they asked us how old he was when they seated us. Why even ask? This policy or price was nowhere on any of their signage. According to the menu posted, four to six years of age were about $5. If we had known that his meal was going to cost us full adult price we would have turned around and gone elsewhere. He had three pieces of sweet and sour chicken, some lo-mein, and a small ice cream cone. Hardly worth $9.99. I hope the extra $5 they made off of us was worth the price to lose our future business.
Blatant deceptive business practices going on at China Star. Avoid...
