This was actually the first time I have heard about the Himalayan Curry Cafe so I was excited to see what types of foods were being served here and if it would become one of my go to spots to grab a meal. After arriving at the cafe, I was surprised with the variety of menu items the place had to offer. From curries, to fried noodles, and soups, it was difficult to decide what to order. I had a difficult time choosing what to pick, so I just ordered the “Himalayan Fried Chicken Noodle” as it seemed like a simple meal to try. It was late at night so I was worried about how fresh it would be, but I was pleasantly surprised. It came in less than 10 minutes, piping hot in a Styrofoam box filled to the brim with noodles and veggies. I was happy to see the variety of vegetables that were used in the dish. It included green peas, zucchini, green bell peppers and onions. The chicken wasn’t dry, which was a plus, and the noodles were cooked well, not at all overcooked. The taste of the sauce was bland and quite watery though. It did not have much flavor to it other than being slightly sweet and with a hint of spice, which I guess is nice if you can’t handle spicy food. The overall portion of food was quite reasonable for the price, which looked like it could be about two portions. I devoured it all in one sitting since I was starving and felt satisfied at the end of the meal. The staff also were very kind and welcoming. I came with a group of friends an hour before they were closing, and even when it was close to closing time, they wanted our group to stay and finish enjoying our food. I would give the food a solid six out of ten, but the customer service is a ten out of ten.
I went the next day to try another one of their dishes, and picked the “Vietnamese Pho”, since I was craving it after seeing it on the menu the previous day. I also decided to get a drink this time and choose to get the Mango Lassi, a mango flavored yogurt drink, which I have never tried before. I ordered it to go, and the pho came nicely packaged in a deli container. Again, the customer service was amazing, with all the needed utensils being placed in the bag. The mango lassi was in one of the coolers near the door, and at first glance I was pleasantly surprised to see the bits of fresh mango in the drink. The overall time it took to place the order and receive the meal took less than 10 minutes which was nice. After transferring the pho into a bowl back in my apartment, I was happily surprised with the amount of meat that was given. It was about 6-7 thick slices of beef, some were tough, but the rest were perfectly tender. It was not the usual thinly sliced beef, but it still tasted great, and wasn’t bland at all. The noodles were also not the typical thin vermicelli noodles, they were slightly thicker, but at least the noodles were not overcooked. The broth tasted more like a sweet and sour soup broth than a pho broth, but everything in the bowl went well together. The addition of lime was not really needed since in my opinion the broth was already sour, but the Thai basil did add a bit of pepperiness that was needed in the broth. Overall I would give the pho a six and a half out of ten, since it was not the typical Vietnamese pho but it still tasted quite nice. The mango lassi was refreshing with the sourness and sweetness of the mango and yogurt balancing each other out. I would give it a solid eight of ten, as it wasn’t as sweet as I wanted it to be. In conclusion, I think that Himalayan Curry Cafe is a great place to go to if you want a decent meal for a decent price. A plus is that the people that work there are very friendly...
Read moreI came to the Himalayan Curry Cafe for the first time this past weekend with some friends and ordered the pork fried noodles. We all got our food within 10 minutes or less and the staff were super nice to us. We all sat at our table with our food very quickly although the restaurant is configured in a weird way. It looks like any other small sit-down restaurant but you actually order your food up-front and then wait for it to be given to you in a tray before heading to your seat. They also give you your food in styrofoam containers which I am not a huge fan of. It does make it easy to take leftovers home but it seems wasteful because you throw away the container either way. The hosts were very nice however and the prices were more than acceptable. My plate was approximately eight dollars and included a hefty portion of fried noodles along with vegetables and a good mix of pork. I really enjoyed the inclusion of peas in the dish which I think are a super underrated vegetable. The noodles were cooked to perfection and the whole meal was the right amount of juicy. It was almost like it was covered in a sauce which was a mixture of pork juices, oil, and something else I couldn’t identify. It was very good and had a great consistency that allowed it to cling on to the noodles and veggies without it turning into too much of a sloppy mess. The overall atmosphere in the restaurant was alright. It was mostly empty when we went but it was still a nice environment with soft music in the background. My worst experience in the restaurant came not from the food but actually from the bathroom. There was an unidentifiable puddle of what I hope was spilled food (It probably wasn’t) and it was just overall not well cleaned or maintained. It felt really gross and I made sure to get out of there as fast as possible. It just really ruined my appetite to try to eat a meal after seeing all of that. The rest of the meal was really good though. The restaurant was pretty empty and quiet except for the soft background music which made for an excellent conversational atmosphere. Narrowing in on my pork fried noodle meal the pork was cooked perfectly and had a soft texture to it that I really enjoyed. It was also seasoned perfectly in a way that complimented the hot sauce it was surrounded in. On that note I am actually not a big fan of spicy food but this was the perfect level of hotness to give it a nice kick while not overpowering the taste of the rest of the meal. The vegetables were also cooked really well and came out super soft. The noodles were my favorite part of the meal by far. They were soft and tasty in a way that merged perfectly when mixed with the vegetable/pork mix. Noodles are some of my favorite foods so I knew I was going to enjoy it even before I ordered. The portions were very large and I even took a good chunk of it home to enjoy another day. I don’t know if it was just me not eating a lot or what but the leftovers lasted me another whole meal that I ate with some bread plus a night-time snack for my girlfriend when she got hungry at my apartment. She also gave a raving review about the food as she enjoyed it very much although it was a bit spicy for her taste and it took her a while for her to finish it. Other than that thought I give this restaurant a four out of five stars for great portions, service, and prices but a deduction for bathroom...
Read moreA cozy place with inexpensive food. I enjoy eating here every time. I definitely do recommend coming here.
I believe this is a family owned restaurant because I see the same people every time I come here. A man and his wife or a woman and her husband. They're such an adorable couple (at least I think they're married). They're the type of people I want to hug. One time I did not eat at this place for a few months and I came into the cafe and the guy gave a big, warm "welcome back" kind of smile and I was like, he remembered me??? He either did remembered me and actually did welcomed me or just treated me like another customer and fooled me into thinking I was welcomed back. But anyways, this place has nice, happy people that look like they enjoy what they're doing.
The place itself is kind of small. I would say maybe thirty people at most can eat here. The place has late hours too so that's convenient. By late I mean it is opened until 10 p.m. My routine for this place is I come in, order my food in the front, the staff makes the food in front of me, I pay, I sit myself, I eat, I laugh because the food is delicious, I cry because it's over, I leave.
This place keeps cost low by providing plastic plates and utensils. This place also for every time I come has never offered any sort of deals on mobile apps or websites or anything. So I'm guessing the owners are not to tech savvy. The prices are definitely great though for the amount I'm eating there.
The menu is simple. Maybe around seven items and that's it. No need to worry about, what do I get here. Small enough menu so I can decide what I want to eat at that moment real quick.
I typically get the chicken or butter chicken curry. The curry is just curry, rice, meat, cilantro, and seeds. Lots of rice and lots of curry. I always leave this place on a full stomach. I always leave this place with good food in my stomach. Quick note about the dessert, it's alright. You might like it or...
