I agree with last comment and I was actually having a wonderful day indeed. I was relaxing with a cup of decaf as I read a article from texas monthly and then I decided I was going to randomly read some of the comments from the mill mountain website. The first comment I read I was appalled and saddened to the point where I felt depressed which was annoying because I was just feeling happy a minute ago. This person who wrote this comment because another person had comment awhile back I pursumed about how the coffee here was not good at all. I felt the same emotions as Dan who could not believe someone would say such a thing about this delicious wonderful roasted coffee. I wept bitterly for how the coffee and how anyone could hate roasted coffee that much especially local roasted coffee. Dan I hear you and I am there with you saddened appalled angry depressed. It's a cold world friend. Then I sat in silence thinking about that hateful hateful person who uttered the words not good coffee. I wondered if they were alive still and if so were they hateful or perhaps they had come to terms with themselves. After awhile I just told myself that words are just words then I tried reading my magazine but my mind kept going back to Dan I thought of how he frequently stopped by this coffee shop which basically raised him and I wondered how he is coping with himself after reading such hatefulness towards the coffee that gave him hope as an adult. Dan I hope your doing well and I'm sorry your having to go through that. Just remember that the coffee will always be there deep in your soul. I hope he's ok iv never had to go through anything like hes going through. I pray that his tears will be...
Read moreI love local coffee shops and Mill Mountain always has an interesting and diverse selection of food, coffees, teas, and handmade drinks. I've always had good experiences here except when placing a large order for pick-up.
I was a graduate student at Virginia Tech and placed an order for group servings of coffee and cider for the day I was defending my thesis. As most know, this is an incredibly stressful time and I purposefully called 2 weeks in advance to place this order. I called twice to check in because I was anxious for this to be right. The day of picking up my 8:30 AM order, I was told it was not ready and it was marked for 12 PM pick-up even though two people on the phone confirmed the 8:30 AM time.
I was lucky my husband was able to stay and get the order while I went on campus to prepare for my defense. The employees were apologetic and quickly worked to get it ready, but none of my atendees were able to get refreshments prior to my defense and my husband arrived 15 minutes after I started my presentation.
After talking to other graduate students, this is not a one-time incident. This is a warning to those who may place a large order to allow for extra time as your order may not be ready when...
Read moreMy go-to drink at new coffee places is a mocha, and I personally think Mill Mountain has the best one in town. The ability to get the coffee "for here" and have it served in a big coffee cup was really nice too and makes it seem to taste better too (maybe it is psychological).
I will say they are not perfect. I find their pastries to be just ok and their sandwiches are pretty basic and something that I can make myself for half the price. Go to Next Door Bakery if you want good pastries and sandwiches. They've got the best food (but average coffee).
Also, I got the iced mocha here once and it was NOTHING like the hot mocha. It was way too sweet. I think they add extra sugar to counteract the stronger espresso that iced mochas use, but they definitely overdid the sugar.
Overall, they have solid hot espresso and coffee, so go here if you can and try it out.
EDIT: Got the iced mocha again and it wasn't overly sweet like the first time. It was actually pretty strong, but still not on the same level as their hot mochas (and not as good as Starbucks iced mocha, but I will probably get hate for saying that). Still the best place for coffee and...
