for 3 people, we ordered butter chicken and vindaloo (chicken option), both on a medium-hot spice level, along with two garlic naans
starting off with the garlic naan, i thought it was pretty decent it wasn't hard, but certainly could've been softer. it did have a good amount of oil on it, but i only got a little bit of the garlic flavor 2 garlic naan orders came out to four half-naan pieces, which was alright but not great the rice was also fine - nothing special
both curries had essentially zero spice to them at all. the butter chicken might've had negative spice, and i found the faintest hint of some on the vindaloo. in terms of overall flavor, i think the vindaloo had a few more spices and tasted slightly more authentic, but out of the two i preferred the butter chicken's taste as it was a bit more pleasing. thankfully both curries weren't super oily
i did like the chicken in both curries - it was cooked well and retained some juiciness. the vindaloo especially actually had a good amount of chicken in pretty large pieces. both curries had a pretty decent protein/gravy ratio
due to the lack of spiciness and 'real' flavor, i wouldn't come here if you're looking for authentic indian food, but for a facsimile to display for non-indians, it's not the worst imitation i've seen
for the price, it came out to 20 dollars a person for about 2/3 of a curry and 1.5 naans. this is pretty expensive, and the portion sizes don't really make up for this much at all. i was still relatively hungry after i left. especially in blacksburg, where the prices are pretty low, this isn't worth it
Overall, non-authentic indian food but does some things well enough to not be...
Read moreI made the mistake of going at 2:30 pm on a weekday. Apparently the restaurant is not open after 3:00 in preparation for the dinner service, but this was not obvious from the website, the door, or the host. The host did not speak English well, and did not communicate well. Coupled with a dismissive, rude attitude, this put me off for the overall experience. Only the buffet was available at this time, and it was obviously close to being shut down, with most items depleted. I had been looking forward to naan, but there were only dried out cut triangles available. The dishes themselves were typical Indian fare, and might have been moderate to good when they were more fresh.
After about 5 minutes at my table with me food, the host unexpectedly asked me to leave, saying they were closing. I said I had not known that, and wanted to take my food - small portions, btw - with me. At first he said no, but I stated that they did not make it clear that they were closing, and I would have chosen their take-out buffet had I known, as would not pay for food I had not been given the chance to eat. He finally relented.
The restaurant itself was neat and clean, with a nice atmosphere. White table cloths were set for the dinner service, and the decor was decent. I would still like to give this place a chance for a dinner, where I could order what I want, freshly cooked, especially since this is the only Indian Restaurant anywhere near where I live in rural...
Read moreVery courteous service. Great people. Extensive menu. We ordered our standard dishes that we order at all Indian restaurants we visit. Chicken Tikka, Lamb Pasanda, Paalak Paneer, roti and naan. We had Chicken 65 and vegetable samosa as appetizers and pistachio kulfi as dessert. Paalak paneer and the lamb sauce were the best and this is where it ends. Majority of the lamb pieces were fatty and sub par. The Chicken Tikka could not have been cooked in a tandoor - no skewer holes and long slices, not the classic cubes. The chicken was rubbery, inconsistently cooked and it appeared to be a tandoori spiced breast that had been sliced. No way was this true tandoori (take it from someone who has owned an Indian restaurant with a live tandoor). Next, Chicken 65 was too wet, almost like it had a paste. Not how it should be. The roti and naan were okay at best. Last, the kulfi. Pistachio kulfi that was not green. Hmmm... immediately had me concerned. Also, no real taste of pistachio. The first taste was actually that of a mild mango flavor. It was also served with whipped cream and a cherry; why?? Kulfi is a dessert to be relished unadulterated. A disappointing experience overall topped by a few fruit flies around our table. We killed a couple...
