Tried this place last night. We were a larger group so when the first round of drinks took 15+ minutes it was fine, even though only 3 of the 12 were bar drinks and the rest were drinking water (already on the table) and glass bottled coke. Appetizers came out before our drinks. Drinks finally come and my fiancée ordered margarita no rim, has a sugar rim and tastes like straight tequila. She did end up ordering a second one and that one sugar rim and tasted like water.
We order entrees finally after appetizers are completely gone so yea that takes a while too. A while after ordering I asked one of the two girls who had been to our table several times with our waiter to please ask our waiter to come back we want to order a couple more drinks. Another 10 minutes later the entrees start coming out. 1 and 2 plates at a time. Then finally he comes over after all the food is out and I order a drink. We ordered a glass bottle coke and a margarita. It was at least 15 minutes before those two drinks came out. Everyone was done with their meals. I had time to get up go downstairs go to the bathroom and come back and still the waiter came over and I asked him if my drink was coming, he said yea the bar is backed up. I had just walked by the bar downstairs, and I know what a backed up bar looks like being that I’ve worked at several restaurants and breweries. So my $20 strawberry margarita with a sugar rim takes over 15 minutes to come out, it is with a salt rim, and it is ORANGE and tastes nothing like a strawberry margarita. I send it back and say just give me a beer thinking hey you can just grab that it’s easy, still takes another 10 minutes to come out.
Sitting there a manager comes over and asks someone else at the table (only me and my fiancée ordered them) how the margaritas were. They said oh they are the ones that ordered them. As I start telling him they weren’t very good he seems completely shocked and like he had no idea I even sent mine back, yea he was not sent over by our waiter to make anything right. He was just generally asking.
As I’ve said, I’ve worked at several places, and as a server I’m getting them another drink made right IMMEDIATELY and I’m getting a manager to that table immediately. I’m getting them some kind of discount and also a coupon of some kind for another visit so they’ll give us another try because of all of the bs and the waiting and poor service and terrible drinks. As a server I’m doing everything I can to make that right. And they didn’t do anything at all or care at all.
Also just adding extremely extremely extremely overpriced. Worst drinks I’ve ever had and it’s $15-20 a drink. $25 for enchiladas. You’d think you were in LA or NY with the prices...

I was impressed he did not make excuses but owned this as their mistake, and stated he wanted to do better. Mark also personally mailed a gift card to compensate for our poor service. I'm thankful for his honest follow up and hope to visit MEX soon, and post more regarding the food.
ORIGINAL POST 5/12/19: One star for a very simple reason- MEX ruined our Mother's Day.
I called them the day before Mother's Day, checking that they were doing carry out for 5 PM on Mother's Day (the next day). They said they do their buffet during the day, but they could do carry out orders for 5 PM. If it was a big order I should call around 330pm to place it.
So on Mother's Day, the next day, I called at 2:45 PM to place the order - again specifying it was for 5 PM. The woman on the phone, Jade, said that was fine and took all my information and the order. The order was modest, 8 adults and 2 kids worth of food.
Jade then called me back at 3:30pm, telling me that unfortunately they could no longer do my order because they had too many reservations that evening.
WHAT!?!? How is it possible that a restaurant 1) affirms the day before they can do your order 2) takes your order the day of 3) then calls you back an hour and a half before the order is even due, to tell you they can't do it???
Did the kitchen break down? Did they suddenly have a shortage of food? No explanations, no coupons or refund offers, just the statement that they would no longer do my order for me. They said I could come back at 8pm that evening and TRY to get a table. Sorry no thanks, the family was all coming over at 5pm like I had mentioned several times.
I'm sorry but that is unacceptable service, especially when you've already taken my order and you have an hour and a half still to prepare it. They should have known ahead of time how many reservations they had. They didn't suddenly fill up in the 45 minutes from when I called to place my order to when they called back and said they wouldn't do it.
Completely unacceptable. Do not give them your business, go to several of the other Mexican restaurants around here that have integrity and professionalism in...
Read moreAtmosphere & Ambience Mex in Bloomfield Hills delivers a vibrant, inviting setting with modern décor and artful touches. The patio seating is comfortable, and transitioning outside was quick and effortless, thanks to the attentive staff. The restaurant’s upbeat energy sets the tone for a joyful and relaxed dining experience.
Appetizers We began our lunch with the house Chips accompanied by two salsas: the Very Hot Arbol XX and the mild Verde. Both impressed, with the Arbol packing real heat and the Verde offering a fresh balance. The Classic Guacamole was another highlight—exceptionally fresh, creamy, and perfectly seasoned. The Crispy Shrimp appetizer that followed was expertly prepared with a satisfying crunch and flavorful spices.
Drinks Our drink journey showcased Mex’s inventiveness behind the bar. I enjoyed a Frozen Margarita—refreshing and vibrant—while my girlfriend had the Mexcoloada, which brought a creamy, tropical flair to the meal. For a final round, she ordered a Pretty in Pink and I tried the Berry Passionate; both cocktails were beautifully crafted, full of unique flavors, and capped our lunch perfectly.
Main Dishes For the main course, I chose the Steak Smothered Burrito, a generously portioned dish bursting with bold flavors and tender steak. My girlfriend had the Fajita, customized with steak, chicken, and shrimp—all cooked to perfection, sizzling, and well-seasoned. The generous portions and harmonious flavors made each bite memorable.
Service Service at Mex was a clear standout. Our hostess, Laura, ensured our table was pristine and accommodated our request to sit outside. She also kept us informed about current specials and upcoming events. Our waitress, Angie, was exceptionally attentive, knowledgeable, and gave excellent menu recommendations, elevating our meal with her thoughtful guidance.
