gary rack's farmhouse kitchen~
grfk is a small, modest, and homey restaurant in an odd location, that would obviously bother the most meticulous of people such as i, but thankfully- the food does make up for it.
i took my mom out on a 'date' here, as she has celiac disease, and i am vegetarian; grfk was basically our heaven on earth. we made reservations beforehand, but we didn't have to worry, as there weren't many people (we tend to eat linner/dinner at 5:45-7). we sat al fresco in the "happy hour zone," and looked around since we had no menu, and had no idea how the ordering system worked here. after asking the hostess, she told us that we were to scan a qr-code on our table in order to pull up the menu pdfs.
ok, great! safety does indeed come first, and it's a superb way to preserve nature! now here's my problem.
no offense to the residents of south florida, but i'm pretty sure that we can all agree that the majority of people living there are of a certain age; right? yes, there is a tech-savy older crowd, but not everyone knows how to scan qr-codes, download pdfs, etc. as simple as it may be, it can be quite confusing- even for me sometimes (and i'm gen z!).
anyways, back to the review. i ordered an avocado toast, topped with asparagus, pickled onions, and creamy burrata, with a side of sweet potato fries and ketchup. my mother ordered a garden salad (which our waiter forgot to bring), and truffle mushroom pizza.
both were delicious. i wasn't a fan of the pickled onions as they added nothing to my avocado toast dish, and the sweet potato fries were crispy and paired well with the ketchup. before i requested the ketchup, however, i was brought a maple/balsamic sauce- let me tell you; that was not it. it was more of a soup? and had WAY too much cinnamon in it. no biggie, i pushed the little dish to the side, and continued my meal. when i asked my mother about her truffle mushroom pizza, her response was "good!" as i pressed some more, she describes the dish as "not mushy. it was crispy enough- not potato chip crispy, but crispy. the size was fair, and the quality of the ingredients were fresh, especially for a cauliflower crust, gluten free pizza. an honest gluten free pizza. it isn't a 5-star pizza, but i'd definitely order it again."
i think that sums up every dish, the service, decor/atmosphere, and overall experience- simple and honest; organic.
my mom and i have went back another time and will continue to do so. it's a cute little place to grab a quick and hearty bite, have a drink (not for me, of...
Read moreI need to preface this by separating our overall dining experience from the honest efforts made by the wait staff, specifically Trevor. He was cordial, informed and we looked forward to our dinner. Our party of 6 had drinks, and shared an appetizer of Brussels sprouts and placed our orders. About a half hour after we finished our drinks, I inquired of the hostess if Trevor still worked here as I had not seen him anywhere. I neglected to look behind the bar, as he was assigned double duty, for which he apologized. I told him that it really wasn't acceptable to totally neglect us and how could management believe that this would be a solution to being understaffed? Our food finally arrived, after the party's at the next table who came in after us.
One of my friends had ordered the skirt steak, requesting no greens. Out comes his $26 plate with less meat on it than we serve our 9 lb. dog at home. Trevor was taken aback and knew how generally displeased we were with the entire experience. He offered to compensate us from his own dollars, which I said was uncalled for, as it's not about him. He notified the manager, Dean who was meandering around the dining room. About 15 minutes later, he walks past our table and when asked states that he is indeed the manager, and mentions that we must be the table that had a "problem with the steak". Are you kidding me???? Clearly he had no intention of addressing our concerns, and it wasn't like he was so busy that he couldn't stop by previously. He brings out a skirt steak and shows my friend what the dinner plate looks like fully dressed, failing to admit that there was a problem, "as the portions are measured". I was very clear after this entire fiasco that they could comp the entire table, I'd never come back. One of my friends did ask for compensation, which was denied, like she wanted "something for nothing". He told me that the way that they become"better" is by listening to comments such as mine. Only to avoid the potential ire of my wife and friends did I refrain from asking, "do you ever listen to yourself talk when you speak?" What an incredible opportunity for your management group to invest in additional retraining. We tipped Trevor just under 20% and left, as it really wasn't his fault that the experience was so poor. Like a client told me years ago: " If you do a good job I will tell all my friends, and if you do a bad job I will tell all my friends." So, GR Restaurant Management Group, expect that I will "tell all my...
Read moreLet me start this off with the food was good, and the service was excellent! We have been to this restaurant quite a few times, and have always loved the food and the menu. This time: Not so much. Normally parking there is a nightmare, this time it wasn't. The place was empty inside, lots of workers standing around. The menu changed, and not for the better! Gone, was the amazing octopus starter I had looked forward to getting, as well as their skirt steak. Both of those items were simply outstanding! I got blackened mahi and my honey got salmon. The side offerings seemed lackluster, so we both got fries. The portions of the meat was very mall, maybe 4 or 5 ounces at the most, just very small for the price point. We shared an appetizer of buffalo cauliflower, which seemed high. It was very very spicy, and had 4 pieces of cauliflower. Did not seem like a good value. They gave us complimentary cornbread. When it came out, I thought it was a joke. It looked like it was one square, cut into 3 pieces. We asked for more, and were informed there was an upcharge for more. I got a strawberry mule. It was a little pricey at $16, but I got it anyways. It was maybe 6 ounces. Not a good value. But it was tasty.
The menu seemed to be quite disorganized, hard to interpret, and just not anything popping out as a featured/halo meal.
The bright spot was our server Nicole, who was very friendly and attentive.
Sadly, with the changes they have made here, I do not expect to see this restaurant staying open with this menu. Something needs to change here guys!
We will not be...
