Ony visit here, it ended up being a good choice to play off my random desires to eat something you won't find everywhere. This is a polish eatery, and it is a very, very small spot with a seemingly small but nice staff. I did enjoy my food choices, but did not get to enjoy some options as they were out of the items or ingredients to make them. That was disappointing, and is how I ended up with french fries instead, which is not ideal; unless it's some special and memorable type of fries, which these were not. One the items I ordered was super pillowy soft, very. Note, however, that the next day they were nowhere near this as soft or pillowy. This was the Meat Filled Potato Dumplings. I would order it again and finish in one sitting.
The Vienna Porkchop was very delicious as well, a definite reorder. I'm not really a fan of sauerkraut, but did learn that depending on the taste I can like it. I enjoyed the taste of their sauerkraut, as it was not too strong amd really had a nice balanced taste. So if you're not a fan or never had sauerkraut before, give it a try here. The Pork Loin in Mushroom Sauce was even better. You can't go wrong with those two choices.
(I believe it was the pierogis that they were out on this visit. Fyi).
There didn't seem to be much for drink choices, and nothing homemade or different, which was just a little disappointing. All-in-all it was a decent visit, I would stop here again to try more items, and some desserts. It could use some more drink choices and perhaps some specialty drinks. Running out of a primary menu item was definitely disappointing. Plan to possibly take food out due to very limiting seating capacity. Worth a visit or two to eat your way through ...
Read moreCafe Polonia is the only Polish Cafe I have ever been to, and I came for the pickle soup ( 🦓 s are known for eating pickles 🥒 and drinking pickle juice to get the high salt diet we need).
I fell in love with their Hungarian Goulash!
Everything is pricy: $15 for a Zapiekanka: a French baguette with some sautéed mushrooms 🍄🟫 , Gouda 🧀 , and ketchup is steep (and I scraped the ketchup off).
I am glad this cafe exists, as I got to try Polish food without even hopping on a plane, but I wouldn’t come regularly due to price.
The ambiance is incredible: carved stone walls, real wood everything, and homey kitchen utensils hanging from the walls.
The kitchen sounds drove me out earlier than I’d like (I did not finish my food). I couldn’t handle the incessant banging of the chopping, chopping, chopping (if you, like me, struggle with sensory issues, know that even my noise canceling headphones could not drown it out, as the noise is loud and the space is small). I was sad because prior to the chopping, I was enjoying the light conversation and happy music.
Be very careful leaning forward on the chairs as they tip quite easily! I nearly fell!
I would order to go if I came again.
Parking is limited out front, but there is one handicap spot at the end of the block. Public transit is easy too.
No stairs, but a significant lip when you enter the front door, and some of the tables are too close together to fit an assistive device.
The toilet is not automatic but is easy to flush.
Also, that is sour cream by the Pierogies 🍓 🫐 , not...
Read moreCafe Polonia is truly a hidden gem nestled right in Dorchester's Polish Triangle. Warm, welcoming and utterly wonderful – this place offers the coziest and most appetizing Polish comfort food I have ever come across. It’s not just a casual comment when I say this – it comfortably sits within my top 10 favorite restaurants in the whole of Boston!
This is what we had:
Polish Plate: A sampler of three different pierogies, stuffed cabbage, and grilled kielbasa with cabbage stew. Each item was hearty and flavorful, truly a delight for someone seeking an authentic Polish culinary experience. Potato Pancakes: Four pancakes served with tart apple sauce and sour cream ... highlight was the delectable mushroom stew we added!
What certainly stood out was not only the quality of the food, but also the generous portions and friendly service.
They have a selection of Polish beers, and at $7 a liter, I couldn't ignore such a bargain. Simply put, the whole dining experience at Cafe Polonia is very reasonably priced considering the excellence served in every bite.
