I would pick up a pizza for the office almost once every week for the past 4 months and I have to say this is probably one of the worst places to get pizza in City of Boston. Walking in on a Friday at 5 and seeing the entire place empty multiple times should tell you about the quality of this place. The service was alright, but staff ranged from incompetent to not being properly trained. The only people that seem to do their job properly are the two young guys making the pizzas. They rely on an iPad system for everything but 9/10 time the iPad the server has is malfunctioning so they have to try and either fix it or grab another one which just takes 10x longer. Now let’s actually talk about the pizza. You’re paying an arm and a leg for a pizza the size of a Red Baron Pizza. I have never gotten a pizza that was fully cooked (at no fault to the guys cooking it as they are doing as best they can without completely charring and burning the outer crust). This is one of the major drawbacks to having a wood burning oven, if the pizzas are to the side of the fire and not above it then only the outer crust cooks leaving most of the pie to be undercooked. Because of this, when you go to pick up a slice it just flops down from the weight and all the sauce and cheese just slides right off. Don’t bother complaining about it though, if you do you’ll be told “That’s just the style of pizza, it’s not our fault” even though any Neapolitan pizza place (which is what they falsely claim to be) that’s worth a damn can cook a pizza that doesn’t fall apart as soon as you pick it up. So if you like taking a loan out of a bank just to get a pizza that is smaller than a frozen pizza and completely falls apart as soon as you pick it up, Mast is the place for you. If you don’t hate yourself, go to (and I mean this) ANY OTHER PIZZA...
Read moreI never like giving bad reviews so I'll be detailed. As a chef of 12+ years (5 of which were an italian wood fired restaurant) I do think they can help a restaurant.
Ordered Carry-out through an app at 8:30pm. I never order food from a restaurant during their last hour open as a courtesy to the kitchen staff (who I know are already cleaning up). Chose an app because it was on their website.
Arrive 35-40 minutes later after receiving a txt from the app. Restaurant has 2 tables seated and the host was sitting at a table towards the back. After a few minutes of looking around with the "hey who is going to help this guy" look, he got up to ask what I needed. I told him I had a take out order online. Visibly worried he said "it'll just be a minute". Hurried and spoke italian with the chef (visibly angry) and a cook. Came back 12-15 minutes later with a bag that wasn't what I had ordered. I told him what I had ordered and he and the chef hurriedly tried to find the order and start making it. Another 15 later and I had the food. No offer of a drink or anything while I waited or apologies.
The food. I don't typically rate negatively on Carry-out but this was obviously freshly made and my hotel was a 2 min walk. It was just as fresh as if a server had brought it to my table. The lasagna was not good, best way to describe it is 1 note, everything had the same exact texture and it wasn't seasoned well. I honestly couldn't tell you if there was meat in it. The pizza was just fine, I got the diavola pizza but the calabrese used wasn't spicy nor spread out well.
With the 100s of restaurants in the area it is really hard to recommend going...
Read moreWent here for Valentine’s Day with my girlfriend. We made a reservation online and it was easy to do. We arrived on time and were brought downstairs by a waitress along with another couple. That felt a little strange, but wasn’t too bad. We were then seated between two couples pretty close in a dim dining room with a booth against one wall with about 4 small tables and chairs next to eachother. Without looking too close, the atmosphere is decent. They had a fake fire going on the tv, leather couch booths, some interesting art, and a light up mirror to take pictures with the bathroom close by. Upon further inspection the room was lacking. The booth leather was pretty worn and ripped. The floor under our small table had French fries and chicken strewn around. Not ideal.
The food itself was not good. We got the Porcini pizza and ravioli. The ravioli was undercooked and cold and we had about 6 under filled pieces to split. The pizza was unique: you eat it with a fork, which was new and fun. I enjoyed the sausage, crust, and mushrooms, but the sauce on it was bitter and ruined it for me. I ended up just eating the crust which was fluffy and putting the toppings on that. My girlfriend enjoyed her glass of Chianti. Our server was kind and they brought over two Reese’s cups hearts for all the couples which was a cute touch.
So pizza crust, Chianti, and Reese’s cups were the highlights.
We would not return. The quality for the price was not good which was surprising with all the good reviews. May have been an off night. Next year we’re booking a table at Beneventos...
