This detailed health department inspection was publically posted in The Gainesville Times newspaper this week. If you know anything about health department inspections, 75 is a pretty awful score! I am tremendously surprised - the food I have had, both breakfast and lunch, is very good. and I thought this place had a better handle on health safety standards. This is a new building always looking clean. No excuse for this score other than lax policies and management not training nor supervising. Low scores appear in restaurants that tend to be in older buildings, with absentee-ownership and low-level, sometimes language-challenged employees in charge or in fast-food establishments with teen-ridden employees whose careless attitudes scream unprofessionalism, with uncaring management oblivious. Papa Jack's is none of these; however, there are some obvious holes in their infrastructure of leadership that would allow such resulting behaviors in their kitchen. We customers should be wary - a 75 indicates "serious" concerns, barely above a "FAILING" score, reserved for restaurants with unpronounceable employee names, multi-cultural menu choices and "suspect" ingredients in food served. Papa Jack's has been a successful, established restaurant with management/ownership that knows better than to allow...
Read moreA little hard to find since google maps takes you to the old location across the street the correct address is 2200 Sparta in the Duncan Plaza complex adjacent to the Texaco but so wonderful once you arrive. I found the correct address listed on the webpage at the bottom. The line for the drive thru wrapped around the building yet the cars moved through quickly and efficiently about 30-40 dedicated parking spots that were all taken so I parked in the big lot next to it definitely a good sign when you see that. For as busy as it was the wait was relatively short 20 minutes, the food is served cafeteria style with daily specials written on a large chalkboard. They had all of my homemade comfort food favorites and the prices were very affordable I ordered the chicken fried steak with country gravy scrambled eggs and the biggest fluffy yet dense biscuit I’ve had since I was child. The eggs were perfect not overcooked, soft nice and airy and the chicken fried steak tender and crisp, the gravy just right no lumps little bits of sausage not pastey or too thick a real homemade taste. Having just moved to the area I was eager to try this place and so glad I did. I wish I had taken a better picture of the meal but it smelled so good and the best compliment to any kitchen is an empty plate. Can’t wait to...
Read moreIf you consider yourself a 'foodie' or require a little 'extra' from an eating out experience, this place is not for you. I am sorry to even leave this review because I think the people and the local effort is commendable, but it is beyond my understanding how this place gets such good reviews. I honestly felt like I was eating prison food...in the prison. Fried chicken was decent and my kids liked it, but I can't do fried so I was out of luck ordering anything other than veggies which were canned quality, mostly boiled, and just plain terrible. To call this home cooking, you'd have had to grow up eating canned foods. Zero chance that most of this stuff has fresh ingredients. Biscuits were horrible and rubbery like a sponge texture. A positive that the people were super friendly and attentive at least left me leaving feeling like I am supporting good people even though it might have been one of my worst meals ever at a restaurant. Cafeteria style is not my thing at all and that only enhanced the prison vibe. Tons of much older people who grew up on a totally different palate, but if you are a 'foodie' steer clear. I am literally left stunned that it was as bad as it was. How does this get more than 4 stars? Who are these people? Maybe I really am a food snob. I'm at a...
