The good, the bad and the ugly.
The good: Well, to start off, it's good that I'm being gracious with a 3-star review. According to my family, the appetizers were amazing. Anyone who doesn't have celiac disease will have an amazing meal. Also, the owner is brave enough to make a bold attempt to cater to allergies, which is more than most establishments will do. That's definitely a good thing, no doubt, but only if the staff is properly trained. The ambiance at this restaurant was great, and A+ for cleanliness. Unfortunately, we got glutened and had to leave directly after our appetizers.
It's also a good thing that my father and brother were able to contain their tempers for the most part, thanks to my mother. Just saying. It could have got pretty ugly. There's no space for "human errors" when it comes to allergies. Nobody wants to see their family members getting hurt. It causes a reaction.
The bad: I mentioned that the owner was brave for catering to allergies. He probably knows somebody in his personal life who has a food allergy, and therefore has sympathy. However, if you're going to promise an allergy-free meal, you need to be prepared to fulfill that promise all the way through, and that requires an organized system. Places like Cooper's Hawk and P.F Changs have developed actual systems which is why they are so successful.
So, I got glutened today (Father's Day). I'm surprised this happened after having a nice conversation with the restaurant owner a week prior to making our reservations. After explaining that my mother and I both have Celiac Disease (gluten-free), the owner told us everything we needed to hear to convince us that we could eat a safe meal there. Nonetheless, our Father's Day was ruined.
The ugly: Our waiter had no idea how serious Celiac Disease is. When we told him that we needed our food to be completely gluten-free, his response was basically "Don't worry, this is nothing compared to a peanut allergy". Well....this comment was ignorant/naive. Not only are you undermining a gluten allergy with a statement like that, but you're also implying that you don't take it as seriously as a peanut allergy. After the waiter made that comment, we were all very uncomfortable. My brother suggested that we leave and go to Cooper's Hawk, but we ultimately decided to stay. Bad choice. The very first bite of food I had contained gluten. I had two bites of my spring roll only to find out that the sauce had wheat in it. Too bad because it was pretty F-en delicious. After that, I needed to rush out of there and get home. So, who's fault is this? I can't take any blame myself because i did my homework and was made to feel this establishment was trustworthy. So, maybe the owner/managers. First and foremost, managers need to oversee orders with severe allergies. Also, they need to develop systems and train their wait staff properly. There's a lot to know about handling food allergies in a safe way. Next comes the waiter. He should have recognized that the sauce given to my mother and I was not gluten-free. The waiter needs to oversee the orders. It can't all depend on the multi-tasking chef. It's a difficult job.The chef is mostly accountable, but it takes a village when it comes to allergies. We all know that the chef has the hardest job. That being said, shame on you for giving us the wrong sauce. How could you "F" that up so badly?
The bottom line: People with Celiac Disease have an actual auto-immune disease. Every time we get the smallest amount of gluten, we suffer for months. It is not at all comparable to a dairy allergy. It is MUCH more serious. Gluten is like poison to our bodies. It destroys our bodies. At the alarming rate that Celiac is growing, I guarantee that you will know somebody in your life personally that has Celiac Disease. Please research and learn about the science since that will make you more knowledgeable and compassionate. Gluten slowly kills people who have celiac. You need a full-proof system and you don't...
Read moreHad the most horrible experience at this restaurant and it was not because the appetizers was mediocre, as the entrees made up for it. It was because our waitress Ana P., as shown on our receipt, was the worst person to ever service us in our lives. An awful waitress and a thief who thought she could get away with stealing from us. We were going to move past her stereotyping my mother and assuming she didn't understand English simply because she has an accent and was just asking for some time to think about her decision. But then after we leave our appetizers unfinished and she finally comes to take our entree orders, she asks if we'll want boxes to take our appetizers to go, and we say yes unknown to us that as she brought our entrees she would also suddenly leave to-go boxes in front of us while we are barely getting our food. Never in our lives has anyone ever thrown to-go boxes in front of us while we are in the middle of our dinner. Then a few minutes later we see a different waitress kindly ask her guests if they would like her to box their food to-go once they've fully finished and she then grabs their plates and goes to box their food for them in the back. What in the world kind of lazy, disrespectful waitress did we get?! After we finished eating we sit there waiting for what felt like 20+ minutes waiting for her to even walk out the back from doing who knows what that prevented her from serving her only table in an extremely empty restaurant. I was feeling very angry and dehydrated at this point because not once did she ever refill our empty waters, and boy do you get easily parched with food that was so sweet and some spicy, with only 3 ounces of water. We even had to watch as every other table received pitchers of water. Again realizing we got the worst waitress there. Lastly, as she finally came out, she took even more of her sweet time grabbing the check and bringing us to-go boxes again for our entrees, and did not care to apologize at all when she saw us unhappy with our experience. We never disrespected her and all we got was disrespect and robbed. Literally robbed. To top it off the next day we check the bank statement and it says we were charged an extra $20 more than what we had written in the receipt. I had a feeling this would happen so we took pictures and we have proof Ana. You committed a crime and we pray that you are fired so you cannot hurt this business any more than you have. You are a disgusting thief and a...
Read moreThis place is gorgeous inside!! You wouldn’t even guess it from the exterior. Was recommended by plenty people about this place. This Dinner was on a Thursday night we were probably the 4th table. Upon entry there was no greeting or anyone. Had to walk to bar to get seated. Once we sat, had to wait awhile for the waitress as she was bartending as well. Ordered drinks, took about 20 minutes for what we ordered. However the Wasabi martini was Delicious! Our Appetizers were avocado egg rolls, which tasted like mushy old avocado paired with a SUPER sweet chili sauce. next were the chicken skewers also served with that sweet sauce. You can even tell from the picture they’re a little raw. It Took awhile for the waitress to even come back after dropping off apps, once we got her attention we sent them back to the kitchen, and ordered our entrees. I didn’t take pictures because I sent it back right away 😭😭 my husband ordered lo mein noodles and I ordered the thai spicy noodles they had. I forgot the names. Once this plate reached our table, we still haven’t received our skewers back from the kitchen, the smell hit my face and it was almost like boiled eggs or something. I even tasted it just to see if it was me, but it was horrible. The seasonings were too overwhelming. My husbands plate was good. My plate was just horrible. All in all, the wasabi martini is great. The chicken skewers could’ve been better if they were cooked all the way through the first time. But It’s boring ordering different things off of a menu and they all come with the same sauce. Rolls were just too mushy for our liking. And after the slooow servici for everything, don’t think we’ll be coming back. Beautiful...
