DIG is surprisingly decent despite the over-"branded" fast casual aspects, and is definitely superior to nearby options.
I got a Dinner Box and focused on the charred chicken, with broccoli/carrots/corn/farro as the side choices. The chicken was especially delicious/tender, and none of the veggies seemed overdone, but everything was slathered in some sort of buttery "char" seasoning mess. Tasty, but a bit much and almost certainly interfering with the health aspect. It's typical for modern fast casuals to claim "healthy" yet serve high sodium all the same, and by taste/appearance DIG is no exception. Still, very yummy. I don't typically ever have farro either, and that was a surprisingly tasty grain choice worth learning more about.
Even though I knew better, I also had to try their mac and cheese...and again, slight surprise at how good it was, regardless of it of course not being proper baked mac (it's pretty hard to find anywhere with proper mac in NJ so it's whatever). The cheese mix was far less soupy than I'd anticipated, sporting a thick consistency, although the actual macaroni was a bit too small for my preference.
I picked up my order and the service was fast, but otherwise I just sort of glimpsed around inside and can't say too much about service/ambience. It's maybe a bit overly spacious and could use more seating, but what's there seems fairly nice. Price-wise it's not bad if you stick to the "non-premium" options, but choosing things like fish and mac will affect value considerably.
Overall, DIG seems like a solid fast casual place...don't think I can rate it higher though since the surrounding "corporate branding" aura is kinda' off-putting (probably unavoidable for places like this). It's a big step-up from nearby Sticky's at least, and reasonably better than Chipotle and CAVA as well. I'll order...
Read moreI planned on going to cava but they were closed and I thought that dig looked similar and was almost next door so I thought I'd give it a try. I should have walked right out as soon as I saw that the line at730pm on a Monday was over a dozen people long, but thought maybe they all just got there at the same time. Nope. I was in that line for thirty minutes watching some really slow service in front of me while standing next to the raw produce and certainly in the way of people who wanted get behind me in line
While waiting for thirty minutes surely that's enough time to look at the key! But nope they have some vague signs above the line that list items with no actual rhyme or reason. Bases, sides and proteins scattered between each. The seasonal items presented in a list without specifying what's what. The pre-made combinations no where to be found.. Glad I had enough time to go online to find a real menu.
Finally it was my turn and I looked at what food they had sitting on the counter. Trays of potato and broccoli and such just sitting in the open but no labels. I didn't even see some of the options. I see a tray of salmon and ask how long it's been sitting there. The kid says over thirty minutes. I order the chicken, that was fresher and I didn't feel like dying that night. He begins to cover my bowl without even asking if I want sauce. I guess maybe it's normal to get it on the side but yet they still have those bottles right there.
I get home to eat my food and while it tasted fine, the broccoli was so large I was able to cut each piece into 4...luckily I was home too bc its not like they gave me any cutlery in my to go bag. The carrots were ok, but definitely over cooked.
The food was ok. The service was awful and the...
Read moreDIG in is definitely a place worth trying, I'm so happy that they brought a location to New Jersey, and that it's less than 20 minutes away from me! This visit, I parked in the back and entered through the rear entrance, which is always convenient, especially when it's raining. It's a clean and bright space. I was immediately greeted when I walked up to the counter to order. I ordered a custom DIG protein bowl, which comes with one protein, three sides, and a sauce. I went with the charred chicken, homestyle mashed potatoes, sheet tray carrots, and the Jasper Hill mac and cheese, with garlic aioli sauce. The portion size was hefty, and everything was absolutely delicious!
The mac and cheese was hands down the best non homemade version I've had from a restaurant, it was rich, creamy, and FULL of flavor. The mashed potatoes were also incredible, smooth and perfectly seasoned. If I wasn't trying to cut down on starch, id be there everyday ordering this same bowl. Even though I know everything on their menu is great, this bowl will definitely be my go to cheat meal.
I've also tried their chili lime Brussels sprouts, charred broccoli with lemon, roasted potatoes, and char-grilled steak, and they've all been solid choices. The ingredients always taste fresh, and the flavors are well thought out. I'd love the recipe for the Mac and cheese and sheet...
