We were in the mood for a new restaurant when I found this one on Google. We decided to try The Old Man for some BBQ.
I had the 3 Meat Combo Platter for $17.50. I chose 1/4 lb Brisket, 1/4 lb Pulled Pork and 1/4 Slab Ribs. My sides were Baked Beans and Onion Rings. My wife got the 1/4 lb Brisket Platter for $11.50. Her sides were Fried Okra and House Made Potato Chips.
Now I am kind of picky when it comes to my sauces. I wanted to try more than one with my platter so I got the Hot Chipolte (not overly hot and served with a jalapeno slice in it) and the Old Man (slightly sweet with a mild spice to it) sauces. Each were OK on their own, but when I mixed them it really came to life. I was a little upset that they charged me an additional .50 for a small cup of the Old Man sauce! Really? You can't just throw that in? BBQ is already expensive enough! My wife got the Kansas Sweet sauce. It too was very good (with a little zing to it) and made a good dip for the okra.
Anyway, all of the meats were DELICIOUS! They do a dry rub and serve the sauces on the side. So when the reviewers who said it was dry, DUH! My meats were anything BUT dry! My wife doesn't like the fat on the meat so she cut it off and gave it to me. My wife is the GREATEST!! The ribs were so good that I sucked the bone dry. (Yes, it really is a thing!) The pulled pork was great both dry and with sauce, as was the great brisket. Again, I poured the mixed sauces on the meats after trying them on their own.
The beans were good. They had a taste of pepper and mustard in them. The onion rings tasted like the ones I used to get at a restaurant I once worked at. They are the bomb! I liked the Okra, and I am not a huge fan of it normally. The house made chips were cooked to a deep brown and a crispy texture, as they should be! I did suggest to them that they should salt them while still hot. They needed just a bit more than we got. The chips reheated well the next day by putting them in a fry pan and salting them.
The staff was very friendly and courteous. The waitress we saw was not ours, but she still greeted us warmly and asked us if everything was OK. The waiter we had was very friendly and answered all questions we had. He recommended sauces to us based our conversation. He also recommended coming in on Wednesdays for their 2 lb wing special served with Coors Light (not everything is worth serving, ha ha!).
They had Upslope Lager $5.00 on draft which paired well with the meal.
I saw complaints about the dry Texas Toast they served. Mine was lightly buttered and cooked on a grilltop to a nice light brown on both sides. This toast is to be used as a sopping bread or as a sandwich bread. It was perfect for these purposes.
They had pinball machines and a golf game with a large screen TV to play on. The TV's were on golf (above the golf game), bowling, and ESPN. The volume in the bar was not so loud as to create a problem for conversations.
Oh, and don't try to reheat your food in the to go containers. They melt.
Overall I give them an easy 5 stars with a little room for...
Read moreIve been a patron of this bar for the last two years. This bar is one of my favorites in the Broomfield area. Tonight, we went to old man to celebrate a 40th bday. We were playing a bar game that is offered by the ATM. Similar to a key chain ring on a string, and swinging to hook the ring, when she attempted the game, the key chain ring fell off. Not a big deal, this has happened before. Nope, the bartender Korey starts screaming at us. Grabs her $20 drink and pours it down the drain (it was full and they refused to remove it from the bill). We were stunned. Like I said, we've been patrons and have high regard for this bar. We tried explaining what happened and he started laughing condescendingly and screaming "cut off" in front of everyone. Considering no one in our party was being volitile or inappropriate, it was a really quick and explosive reaction. When we started asking questions on why this was escalating so much, he said he would call the cops. Again we were looking around confused on why someone in our group is getting screamed at. While crowded at the register, a member of my group's elbow caught on the card reader on the counter while trying to close out (it was not secured to anything) and it slid off of the counter. The bartender started hollering that it was intentional. WHA? I can't tell if this guy was having a terrible night or has no EQ while working behind a bar. We had multiple fully sober people in our group and the fact that multiple people said he was flipping out over nothing was concerning..to the point where it felt like a ploy to get attention or inflate his ego..he sent the police after one of our vehicles and literally the cops just shrugged it off like the guy was having...
Read moreAbsolutely loved this BBQ dive. I read a lot of positive reviews online and decided to try it, and it absolutely did not disappoint. This is DELICIOUS BBQ food!! It's a small dive bar, but very clean with a lot of character. They play really good music and the staff working there are super friendly and nice. Normally, they don't provide table service but we went at noon on a Saturday when it wasn't that busy so we had the staff wait on us. They all took turns at the tables and asked if anyone needed anything. Loved the attention and service. But down to the food, it was very tasty. I got ribs, brisket, potato salad and baked beans served with Texas toast. My husband got ribs, pulled pork and potato salad served with Texas toast. And we split a basket of beer-battered onion rings. All of it was excellent!! My husband tried the Old Man BBQ sauce and he liked it but I didn't. I thought it was too much like ketchup and tangy. I got the Kansas Sweet and it was very, very good. You dip your BBQ, it doesn't come on it, which I liked because then you can use as much or as little as you like. I also liked the containers they served the sides in, plastic containers, so if you have leftovers, you just ask for the lid and go. Very convenient. I highly recommend this place. Next time, I want to try the wings because I guess that's also what they are known for, next to their BBQ. We found our new BBQ place and will definitely be back again and...
