Let me just start off by saying WOW WOW WOW!!!!! What a great place I found in Brownwood Texas. And I wouldn't have found it if I had not missed my turn or earlier in the day to come home. Once I missed my turn I knew there was other ways to get back to San Antonio and going through Brownwood was one of them. I was starving and there was a big advertisement sign out on the highway about Underwood's. Figured I'd give it a try. Best decision I've ever made. Cafeteria style dining. All the staff that I ran into were all very very nice. The young lady at the beginning explained how everything worked. The server gives you your meat choice and then the best thing I've ever heard she said "everything from the green beans down is self-serve and it's unlimited desert and unlimited rolls."I decided to have the 3-piece chicken with mashed potatoes, gravy and rolls with a sweet tea. The other neat thing was the little lady walking around the dining-room pushing the cart asking if you wanted a refill on drinks or on your deserts. This brought me back to the early sixties and the Wyatt's cafeteria I used to go to with my family that did the very same thing. This was a small town, relaxed, friendly environment to just sit back in this small town in a cafeteria Restaurant and enjoy some fantastic food. I have traveled all across the Southwest, Colorado, South Dakota Missouri Kansas Oklahoma and more. This is the first time I've ever given somebody 5 stars and they absolutely deserved it. Anytime I travel now if Brownwood is a possibility I will get off the highway and drive the extra hour or so just to swing over there and eat. If you're in Central Texas and you're going to be near Brownwood pull into Underwood's and have some great food.

This was a fist time visit. I was looking for GOOD BbQ and this was rated best in the area according to a few reviews. People, please do not go to this restaurant based on any ranking or reviews. If you want to go based on how long it's been in business or something else, go but don't go because your looking for BbQ. At best the sampler plate is a baked meat dish with your choice of sausage Very nice people but the service was a little slower paced than most restaurants. Let's get down to the MEAT of it all. If you want fried chicken you may be lucky but looked good but I didn't try it. However, if us seasoned like the meat, I would say it's a hard pass The "steak" was tender and the pork rib fell off the bone but everything was bland. The sides looked good but they tasted bland. The only positive thing I can report is that the jalepeno sausage was probably not made there because it was really good. Oh they make their own Whipped topping. So $40 for two people and the best thing we tried was a piece of sausage and a scoop of whipped topping. If the second best BBQ restaurant in this town is worse than this I wouldn't even bother stopping anywhere in this town. I almost forgot, the upside to this restaurant is that they do offer Stevia as a sweetener option.

Stopped by on the way from Austin to Lubbock. The lady looked up this cafeteria as a good place to eat. We know Day Tripper, Texas Bucket List and Texas Country Reporter have all visited. We just beat the Sunday rush. When you wind through the line up to the serving area, you pick one protein and you can have as many sides as you want. The proteins include roasted 1/2 chicken, 1/2 spicy roasted chicken, ham, chicken fried steak, fried chicken, and a bbq beef. Pick one, they serve. The self serve sides included coleslaw, potato salad, rolls, green beans, carrots, mashed potatoes, three kinds of cobbler, etc. , plus drinks. I had the roasted chicken side and it was cooked perfectly, tender with a crispy skin. The coleslaw was great. Green beans are green beans. I would have enjoyed a tossed salad but didn't see it offered. The lady like the chicken friend steak. The teenager like the slab of ham. The servers walk around the tables refilling drinks and offering more rolls. It was packed and a fun place to visit. We will stop again.

My family and I went (it's a normal spot for us), and the food was good as usual. The wait staff was horrible towards us. ( never have we been trested this way) We went into the 2nd dining area, where we always sit. Then, one waitress started giving us strange looks. She seemed to be a head waitress??? She came in and aggressively closed off half of the 2nd half of the dining area and closed half of the entrance leading into the 2nd dining area with 2 younger wait-staff. We asked her if we needed to leave out, and she said, "No, we just don't want no one else coming in because we are cleaning the salt and pepper shakers." Eventually, they closed the entire entrance with just a sliver of the sliding doors open. A family member got up to get more to drink (no one came by like they usually do to ask if we needed more to drink) and was greeted with a look of disgust as they went to the soda fountain. Again, we asked if there was a problem, and we were told no. A second member went to the fountain and was told by the young lady that it was closed. They had to get them more to drink from the drive-thru. It seemed to BE a problem with us sitting there. NEVER have we ever been treated so poorly and not waited on. The lady who passed the fresh rolls came through twice and was very friendly, but the other 3 wait staff were NOT. My church family (besides my own family) also frequents this place on a regular basis, and I'm unsure if I should tell them about...
