I paid 6.25 for a 12 oz. latte. It was very good, but really?? One size, no milk options. Atmosphere is ok, kind of run-down. Needs painting. Front of house is fine, but it extends into two different rooms with run-down furniture. Not a place to really sit and work, unless you are a college kid. The people behind the counter were very nice, and the latte came quickly. Overall, glad it is there, but certainly not a destination. Coffee is very good, though!
Edit: the manager or owner must have seen the review as I sat down for a couple of minutes to answer an email. She came out from the back area and approached me cold. She told me it was an old lumber building and there is nothing they can do to it, and they are very proud of their little building. No introduction, not "Hi...I saw your review...I am sorry...how can we make it right?" Owners do that. Employees rationalize a situation, owners make it right. She must have been a manager.
Great! Be proud! Excited for you. Glad you are here to offer a coffee service. Perhaps offer different milk options, and decorate? The city of Bryan has no problem with offering nicer seating, does it? You can't wipe down the window sill I was sitting next to with food and stains on it? Take a look through fresh eyes.
Offer a larger 20oz size, especially when the competition offers a 20oz for your 12oz price. I am a business owner...I GET IT. But you are in an area without a ton of traffic. Perhaps offer an incentive to come besides the coffee and a place to sit. Everyone has that. Not complaining about a few pennies, but I drove out of my way to get a big drink, and I left with a Coke can-sized coffee. No options!
Next time, instead of coming out from behind the counter to rationalize, perhaps ask questions. I had you at 5 stars for service. After Karen came out to rationalize why the paint is peeling off on the inside of the building instead of asking how to improve the guest's experience.
To anyone reading this: go get an expensive small drink to sit on student furniture. You'll feel extra-cultured.
I won't patronize this...
Read moreTavo is easily one of my favorite shops in town. Despite already knowing a lot about pour over and espresso, I feel like I learn something new every time I visit. The staff and owners are incredibly kind and ridiculously skilled at their craft. Not only do they source amazing coffee, they understand every step in the process from farm to our cups. I love that they always have new coffees to recommend at the pour over bar, and have taken the time to understand my pallet for espresso. My favorite thing however, is that they truly do strive to have coffee and tea for everyone. While I enjoy pour over and drinks that have less milk and sugar (because I love to taste the subtleties in espresso), my husband likes much sweeter milkier drinks. Tavo’s menu and style can accommodate us both and gives us both lots of options. There aren’t many places we’ve been that truly offer what we both enjoy. My friends who don’t drink coffee also love that they have loose leaf tea!
Let’s be honest, the coffee is enough to keep me coming back as long as I am able, so the atmosphere is just cherry on top. There is so much unique history to the building and so many cool details to notice. There’s also ample working space, WiFi and great areas for conversation!
Lastly, just a little piece of advice. I find coffee to be the best when I truly treat it like a mindful experience. When you encounter the kind of skill level present at Tavo, it’s worth slowing down a bit and really taking it in. It can be busy in there (because it’s just that good). In the few minutes it takes the staff to catch up on all the orders, take a moment and just soak the place in. It’s worthy of that. If it’s really busy at the bar, but you want to know more about coffee just wait around a while, slower moments do come. I and plenty of other regulars have learned a great deal by waiting for...
Read moreI've gone here once a week for the past 6 months or so because I finally found it: the best coffee in BCS. Other shops have good atmosphere, but they don't have four separate spaces and vibes covered in their own artwork, plants, and soundsystems. Oh, and the art and plants are for sale! This place has a unique history that you can see in the architecture all around you-- go ahead and take a seat in the vault, it's lovely. The coffee? Have you ever said "I don't like black coffee" because when you tried it at a shop or from your keurig it was sour or bitter? Let Gustavo tell you why that happens and allow him to make you a pourover coffee-- black. I did. Turns out black coffee has taste. The words on the package mean something, and you DONT need the artificial flavors that k cups have. If you see a pour over you like, grab it right then. They go at cost and the selection changes as soon as they're out. The lattes and cappuccinos are excellent. Of course they are. Tavo has an award-winning latte artist and house made syrups with rotating seasonal varieties. Everything is made with love and care--especially since Gustavo is a 5th generation coffee farmer. Try Tavo. If I haven't convinced you, yet, maybe you'll go across the street during the farmers market on Saturday. It's that close, after all. They even have snacks-- sometimes homemade by...
