After returning from Chicago last weekend, I headed to Midway Dogs to see if it stands up to the Chicago hot dog and Italian beef sandwich I had in Chicago. The owner was raised in the Chicago area, so my expectations were high. She did not disappoint. The Chicago hot dog was picture perfect, delicious, and had the celery salt, among other things, that makes it the real "Chicago" dog. It helps that the hot dog bun itself is from Chicago and not a local purchase. As for the Italian beef sandwich, despite being in my warming oven for over 2 hours because I wasn't hungry after eating the hot dog, the sandwich held up. The bread was not soggy, the meat was still moist, and the hot peppers added a nice heat. It was delicious and better than the Italian beef sandwich I had in Chicago at a place claiming to be the home of the original Italian beef sandwich. Midway Dogs is the real deal, but the true test is whether I would drive 30 minutes again (traffic was good today) to get to this...
Read moreI stumbled across this little gem hidden in the Thicket Food Truck Court in South Austin. As it had been a while since I had any good Chicago comfort food, they Vienna symbol glared at me like a beacon in the night. Upon my arrival I was greeting by a friendly staff and the Owner Bonita. I decided upon a dog and an Italian Beef. Italian beef's are something that each person likes their own way and Midway didn't let me down on the customization. I like mine half dipped with sports and extra Giardiniera. The food quality was fantastic! It really took my back to my time in Chicago. After speaking with the owner I understand why. She has an exclusive contract to serve real Vienna products and even goes so far as to ship the bread down. The prices were fair as well. I am very glad I found it and I...
Read moreMidway was recommended to me by an acquaintance for their genuine Chicago style Italian Roast Beefs and for Chicago Kosher Hot Dogs. I'm a Chicago native and there's never been a place in Austin to find either that are up to the "standards" I want. Bingo!😋 Midway exceeded my expectations in every way.👍😛 If you've never had the "real thing" in Chicago style food, you must make a visit. I'll be frequenting Midway often. BTW, Bonita, the owner, absolutely knows her food and the Chicago lore that goes with it.😁 Please be careful and take your time in finding the correct driveway. Use your MAPS ..... In general, the entry is east of Manchaca and west of the Post Office. More precisely, it's immediately east of the railroad tracks and west of the stoplight for Twin Creeks on the north...
