Took my sister and spouse to Elmwood Avenue Location to treat my sister for her birthday. I ordered a corn beef on rye, the meat was so tough I alerted the manager & she made me a roast beef medium which was also very tough to the point I showed my sister & spouse how I couldn't even pull it apart with my hands - now that's really tough. I threw it out, it was that bad. There was a price difference of $3.00 between the corn beef and roast beef which I was NOT offered a return. My spouse turkey w/mashed potato was okay, she said nothing memorable. My sisters beef sandwich was okay. I also bought a piece of pumpkin pie so I could somewhat fill up, it was dry probably sitting around a while. My bill came to $44.96 for a lunch that was not satisfying OR up to Charlie the Butcher standards! Had it been the quality of the original Charlie's I wouldn't have minded the high priced sandwiches but the quality at this location is awful. While sitting there I then noticed people were buying mainly the turkey, milk shakes, salads and soup so apparently that is where they make their money. The manager knew I was displeased and would not give me eye contact which is another tell. Take your chances at this location and don't be surprised if you are...
Read moreWe stopped by over the weekend as we were in town for a mini Mother's Day Vacation. I did some research and Charlie's came back as one of the top places reccomended for beef on weck, so we decided to stop in. I was very hesitant to stay when we got there because it was empty (both times)but it is right near the college so I assumed maybe most people in the area had gone home for the weekend. The sandwiches were delicious. I loved the bread and bought the topping to make my own weck at home. My husband got mashed potatoes and gravy, and I was impressed with how good they were. I thought they were going to be instant but they reminded me of Thanksgiving. My kids also loved their old timey fountain drinks. The only downside is that the staff has little to no personality, we stopped in twice and both times the staff was kinda blah. Not sure if that's just their service or because we're not locals/regulars. I'd still reccomend trying them out, but don't expect to feel like they actually...
Read moreThis one can be a hit or miss. Sometimes the products themselves taste like they're getting old. For reference, their Rib Fridays. Sometimes the Ribs taste and smell delicious and irresistible. However, for the past few visits (3 spread out between two months,) not only are the ribs smelling bad, but the quality of the sides are also deteriorated. Crusting mashed potatoes, old Mac and Cheese, and Russian potatoes just a bit slimey.
However, if you catch them when all of the products are fresh, the ribs are exceptionally tender. Their fresh Mac and Cheese is the best in town, the Mashed potatoes are yummy as well and lastly those Russian potatoes are to die for when fresh.
It's all about it you get lucky...
