I'm so disappointed to have to write this but that's the point of this platform. I've been a fan of forty thieves for years. Their food is great I love the atmosphere, good beer selection you name it.
Today ended all of it. I ordered my usual pb and j burger and it was great as ever. My fiancé ordered the Nashville hot chicken sandwich. I know what a Nashville hot chicken sandwich is. She knows what a Nashville hot chicken sandwich is. It's hot but it isn't fire on a bun.
Their verison of the sandwich is fire on a bun. She tried it and it was inedible so I tried it and it was too hot for me and I like spice. I contacted the waitress and asked for something else because it was inedible and they provided us with another meal no issues. Unfortunately they intended for us to still pay for the Nashville sandwich because "we ordered it" and "there's nothing wrong with it." I now proceed to argue with the waitress that the sandwich is not edible at this spice level and she says don't you know what a Nashville chicken sandwich is? Don't patronize me. I've been to Nashville plenty of times and we order them all over this city and many others and none have ever been this spicy.
I ask to speak go a manager. A large guy gets up from the bar and this is the part that upset me. Gets in my face hovering over me and we'll within my personal space and says what's the problem. I explain about the sandwich and he says the same don't you know what it is it's supposed to be hot. I again explain hot is hot fire is fire. It's not edible. To his credit he comped the sandwich but I received no further communication from the manager and the waitress apologized explaining that people are responsible for what they order and we don't usually do this.
Now I've been to a lot of places and I can tell you with a certainty I have never ever had somebody argue with me and treat customers this way. That alone is one thing, to have the manager stand over me attempting to intimidate me and get in my face and personal space is beyond anything I have ever experienced.
I will never ever ever return to this place. Not for free not if that guy is fired, NEVER. Worst customer service experience of my life and I'll make sure to let everybody I know aware of what happened. In the service business the customer is the priority. I hope it was worth losing us and all those I tell over a...
Read moreI was debating on even making this review cause I do visit 40 every now and then. Late at night this place becomes a college bar which is fine but I’m not a huge fan of crowds, so I mainly visit early evenings for food and drinks. The food here is really good and they have great beer options.
But my last experience wasn’t ideal.
I noticed they are using smaller glasses for their draft beers but still charging full price. Normally I’d be like “huh I guess they don’t do pints” but then 10 mins later I notice a gentleman with a beer in a pint glass. I brought it up to the server and she indicated that the owner has “select taps” that get the smaller glasses based on alcohol percentage. That seems extremely strange especially when the beers we ordered were in a 5% range…
The second complaint was when the check came and the appetizer we ordered was not the same price as the menu displayed. It was actually $1 more. Now I know most people won’t complain about a dollar but that’s why it bothered me even more. How many dollars more are people overpaying for? If you just adjusted it on the menu it wouldn’t be an issue. I seriously hope this isn’t an intentional way to skim extra money onto the experience but with the beer glass incident, it could be.
The third complaint is a simple one. Please clean your menus off. The ones we were given were caked with old beer and various other remnants of crumbs from previous customers. Hard to read a menu when it’s all stuck together.
We do like 40 but it’s things like this that make me consider other options when we’re deciding on where to go.
** I included a pic of the mismatched pricing and the...
Read moreI will start off by saying this, if you love having a nice hearty lunch. That involves a nice burger and no crowds, I strongly suggest you come here. I always wanted to try this place out, but it was always jammed pack. Also it's hard to find parking on Elmwood, especially around dinner time to close. Fortunately, parking or dealing with a large crowd at Forty thieves during lunch hours, is not a problem. The interior is just how I like it, a industrial look with the feel of the prohibition era. The bar is a nice touch as well, you have the feeling after a long day of work. Just coming here getting a cold one and just unwinding before you go home. The place is actually larger inside than I thought by driving by. I like the fact it's clean and fresh smelling. As for the menu, it's limited in my opinion. Only because if you are not into burgers, you have a small section of salads and other small dishes, available to you. But do not let that deter you, the food is great. The portions are nice and well worth the price. I ordered the house burger, and everything was great. The meat was thick and juicy, the bun was soft and chewy and the condiments was fresh and clean. My wife ordered the chicken salad with avacado. Fresh greens and grilled chicken is always a nice thing. And there dressing, I want to say it's cilantro, but my wife thinks it's pesto. Anyways, the dressing was very fresh, I do suggest you have it on the side though. Ladies, be warned your eating half and taking the rest home. The size again of their food...
