First visit here. The food was just ok. My main issue was that the batter/breading didn't stick to the catfish. They were really friendly but there is such a thing as too much attention. The waitress kept bragging about the food and how fresh it is and that it's the best place in johnson county... I think we can do better though. Main dish was great other than the catfish. I had grilled shrimp (cooked and seasoned perfectly), the fries were nice and crisp on the outside, the fried oysters were nice and it seemed like the same corn meal based breading and no issues with those. The cocktail sauce had a little too much horseradish for me but still good. Fried artichokes were good. The waitress brought us a complimentary oyster nachos and while they were decent, it was just too much. The roumalade was great and the oysters were great but they didn't need the Pico, the chip, or the big chuncks of jalapeno. It would have been perfect on just a piece of crunchy lettuce with the sauce only. We also got a soup sampler and this was were it's at... the crab bisque and jalapeno soups... to die for. The clam chowder wasn't bad but I've had better and the gumbo was way too salty. It was kind of loud but not too bad. More of a sports bar kind of vibe. Staff kept going out to the patio area but no one was seated out there. And at one point a lady got on the bar to pull a bottle of alcohol down (not complaining, it just seemed out of place). The ribeye was under seasoned and over cooked, and the sides just werent that good. The sides were asparagus (not stemed so the hard chewy fiberous part was left on, and they were only seasoned with what looked and tasted like red chili flakes... and im guessing what was suppose to be roasted potatoes, but they were not cut uniformly so some pieces were great and others undercooked. I probably...
Read moreShould have known that my review of fish city grill was …. Premature, definitely the tale of 2 different restaurants, went back with 2 more friends after talking about how good it was last time. We were seated promptly and our drink order was taken that was where the “great service ended this time. The server we had this time seemed that he couldn’t be bothered to take care of us. We told him that 2 of our party had never been there before so they would like to try the samples that we had last time the manager on duty came over and told them about the samples. A while later the server came back to take our orders, the orders were 2 fish and chips 1 cup of gumbo 1 cup of clam chowder 1 full snow crab boil and 1- 1/2 snow crab boil add sausage (same thing I ordered last time) he left. Came back a few minutes later and told me they don’t do half boils 🤷♂️when I told him that just last week I ordered it because the manager said they could do it . He left again a while later the fish and chips were delivered.(looked good) then the boils were delivered the crab was ICE cold literally my half had no sausage corn or potatoes when I ask about it he said he would check on it. When I picked up the crab cluster it was like it just came off the ice bed I can’t overstate how cold the crab was. I ask another server to speak to the manager when he came over I had him feel the temperature of the crab he said he would take care of it a bit later he brought me some hot crab, sausage, potato, and corn and he replaced the other boil for temperature. He did however make the bill right. So in closing I would have to say that fish city grill is either going to be great or terrible depending on the server, management, and...
Read moreWe were pretty excited about visiting here for the first time but very disappointed with the outcome. The name of the place is fish city GRILL but there's no from the grill section on the menu. You have to look at a chalkboard wall on the side of the dining area which is directly above someone's table. It is hard to see from your seat and really awkward. The only entrée fish on the actual menu you receive at the table is catfish, tilapia, flounder, shrimp, and oysters and if memory serves they're all fried.
I ordered Halibut but it comes with Old Bay which is just the worst so I asked for it to not have it. They obliged. It did come out without the old bay but it was undercooked. It also came with mashed potatoes that tasted like water and unseasoned steamed broccoli raab. Everything tasted like water. My husband ordered from the menu as is (without changing anything) and his dinner was a host of confusing sauces that didn't work well together and hollandaise sauce that was more like butter/mayo frosting than hollandaise. Very strange color and consistency.
Overall, just found the food very lacking in flavor and execution.
The half shell oysters and accompanying vinegar was nice as was the calamari with duck sauce inspired dipping sauce... was a little sweet for our tastes but still good.
We won't be back though. Was expecting grilled fish options- like over fire. Not a fry joint with flat-top grilled fish. Maybe I like my food a little more seasoned than most. The reviews for this place seem good but... it was so bland and watery.. and yes, I know I got the fish without seasoning but that doesn't explain the rest of the meal.
Oh, and our waitress...
