We absolutely loved this place! Came in on a rainy Wednesday night before a show - the place was nearly empty, which gave us a little pause, but we were hungry and had a deadline and we were seated immediately so that was great. I’m sure their attendance was t helped by the weather nor the construction right outside their back door.
The server (only one there at the time) was lovely and personable, and while she told us she’d just started there she went out of her way to get whatever information we needed and was prompt and attentive throughout;m. The first thing that really surprised us was when my daughter ordered lemonade, which was met without a blink, and when our server brought the lemonade she said “I hope it’s ok, we don’t have lemonade so I made it for you.” We ended up all trying it and it was so good that four of the six of us end up ordering it!
The next surprise was a nice little courtesy, when my wife and I ordered a Guinness to split and they brought it already in two small glasses - nice touch.
The biggest nice surprise was the food, which we all agreed was very good… but the fish and chips was legitimately some of the best I’ve ever had - big chunks of fish with a light but flavorful batter, not the thick bready coating that sometimes masks lower-quality fish (we later learned that the owner gets all of his fish fresh every day from a local guy in Gloucester). It was also served both with a lovely tartar sauce and a curry sauce that my wife could not stay away from. And unlike one of the other reviewers we all found their fries to be fantastic (to the point where I got to eat fewer of mine than I wanted because the vultures kept swooping in).
The final surprise was the manager coming out to show and describe some of the artisanal sodas they have to one of our folks. We had a lovely conversation with him in which he told us that they had only really been in business for a few months and were just getting their feet under them. They all seemed very lovely and appreciative of our patronage… while the level of service and attention might not be scalable in a full-house situation, everything was good enough that we will absolutely go back and encourage all our friends to do the same. This is a great new, local-owned establishment that is trying to honor the history of Harvard Square and its businesses and keep it from becoming entirely dominated by chains....
Read moreMy girlfriend and I went to the Sea Hag on a Friday night. We were excited to go since it newly reopened (previously The Boathouse which was great) and had exceptional reviews online. I’m not sure if friends and family have been writing reviews up to this point, but it was far from good. For the sake of brevity, I bullet pointed all the issues we encountered:
Do not carry any diet drinks Gingerale (soda) was flat and stale Chicken tenders were burnt to a crisp and blackened Artichoke & crab dip was cold and dry. Moreso texture of a slaw as opposed to creamy Steak and cheese sandwich was chewy and overly toasted stale bread Ordered fries with the steak and cheese sandwich (since fries evidently don’t come with it and are $4 extra) which came alongside the apps for some reason? The “Smash” burger was undercooked and did not have cheese (which we paid extra for) Entrees came out a couple mins after we received our apps as we were still eating We were served drinks once by the bartender and then again by our waitress, signifying miscommunication Long wait time to be given check/checked on periodically
Will not be returning. Disappointed as this is supposedly owned by the Grendel’s Den owner. The previous location was much,...
Read moreBeware: NO DECAF COFFEE! We were a group of 4 for brunch. The food was very good and we appreciated the atmosphere and the convenient location. There was only one person working the room and the place got quite busy, which meant we needed to wait every time we asked for something (like a water refill and the order of bacon he forgot). That part was somewhat frustrating (only because we needed to get somewhere right after, so we were watching the clock), but as the bartender/waiter explained, the busy period is brief, so it doesn't make sense to have additional staff. Something that needs to be said because it was so unexpected and unusual: NO DECAF COFFEE!!! Someone in our group enjoys coffee but can't have caffeine, so that was a big disappointment as she was expecting to have coffee with her brunch, as one would normally expect with breakfast food. I wrote this at the start of this review to convey this to people who may not feel like reading this whole review. I'd go back if I was in the neighborhood, but I'm a caffeine addict, so the beverage offerings were not a problem...
