It was a hot summer's day. The gang had been fighting off the pestering sickness that tailed behind the wings of the metallic eagle that brought them here. Discouraged and uncertain, we traveled from the land of the burgundy stained mountains southward toward civilization in Phoenix. Whether it had been a natural occurrence or divine intervention, the fuel struck near empty on the transfer from 179 to 17. We concluded that the nearest rest stop would suffice. Not to the imagination of the smallest scorpion, nor the wildest coyote, this choice would grant us the opportunity to encounter the most incredible specimen west of the Mississippi.
In ample timing we filled our tank, and in concurrence we decided to eat local before rolling the rubber back on the burnt and crooked freeway. With puffy red eyes, flesh made the color of roses from the direct line of fire that our Sun threw onto us; bellies now roaring, begging for sustenance, we made our way into the one and only, Filiberto's.
Upon entry, everything was normal, save for the furnishings that appeared to have been installed a century prior to our arrival. We were greeted by a young man, stoic and bearded with lenses in front of his eyeballs, he asked us what he could get started for us today. My associate requested a beef burrito. In that moment the ground shook, as if God himself had ruptured the Earth and craned Satan out from his sanctuary, only to cast further heat upon the scorched surface of the ironically named Camp Verde. The gentleman behind the counter asked one time, "A la carte?" My associate could not understand, he took a chance at asking for a repetition of the words that were uttered by the speaker. "A la CARTE" This time it was delivered with vigor and intent. The room got hotter and we became stiff and nervous. The silence was broken by the sound of a small bell coming from our right hand side. A small elder lady and her headgeared spouse entered the establishment. Unbeknownst to them, a bond was about to be forged in the hottest iron ever seen. My associate took the opportunity to thank the gentleman for his support, but had to ask "What does that mean?" The bearded worker replied with a concise "It means just the burrito." It was exactly what he wanted. A smile was drawn upon his face from cheekbone to cheekbone. The order was complete, and everyone was happy.
Since that day we had visited Filiberto's several more times. Each time until the last, our favorite worker was there. We all placed our orders 'A la carte'. Unfortunately on the final day, our old pal was no longer there. Perhaps he has found peace in another world, or he is chasing his dreams in a land more glorious than Camp Verde. Wherever he may be, I will always remember him and his wise words.
Let's all strive to live our lives...
Read moreTerrible! I ordered number 15 first visit ever. Chili relleno so tough couldn’t even chew. Food barely warm and more on cold side. Cost $15 and didn’t have dinner as I got it to go and just a few min away to rv resort. Called them and the gal just said ok I’ll tell the cook or can you come back and we can redo! Like I want to get back in my car and hassle. It’s already horrid. I ordered this same thing at obeirtos in cottonwood and it was delicious. The diners look quite similar. Anyways, I just won’t go back to filbertos because they thought it was ok I just be more inconvenienced by driving back instead of just offering me another try another time on the house. They also said they got new microwaves and they aren’t working well. So basically they knew this and sold the poor food quality...
