I came looking for the Raja rani restaurant that used to be in Ann Arbor by the university. I called and asked and the lady said yes. That was the first thing that went wrong here. If this is the same establishment just different location then it has sadly downgraded significantly. It wasn't very clean inside, nor presentable. The restaurant I was originally looking for had a very homely yet clean atmosphere and had authentic north Indian cooking. This is south Indian fare. Nothing against South Indian..now I didn't order south Indian here but ordered Butter chicken and navrattan korma. The portions were very generous and I appreciate that. But the food wasn't something to call home for. Butter chicken is marinated chicken cooked in gravy..usually the marinate is seeped deep inside the chicken making it rich and delicious and then the gravy adds to it's richness. This sad dish was just boiled chicken or sautéed chicken thrown in gravy. The chicken was overcooked. Navrattan Korma - the word Navrattan means 9 gems. So a korma is essentially 9 kinds of vegetables that come together to make a very flavorful dish in gravy. What I ate at this establishment was lacking it's basic essence. 9 vegetables were missing...what I got was 2 slices of raw carrots and a piece of boiled potato with 10 pieces of paneer that was boiled so it gets soft and thrown into the gravy. The saving grace was service and the masala tea that I ordered, which btw took forever to arrive...
Read moreRaja Rani in Canton might be a new addition into the Canton area, but they have been a restaurant in the arbor area for over a decade.
I came to try it out once and fell in love with the authentic Indian food made by Jay (the owner)and his team. I myself am North Indian Punjabi and this is very authentic food.
I would have to say it is the best Indian restaurant I have tasted in the southeast Michigan area.
On top of that it was so willing to cater to my work. Everyone at my job at the hospital was so impressed. They could not stop asking me where I had catered the Indian food from. The prices are a great deal for the quality and authenticity of the food that you are receiving here.
On top of that the staff are very friendly and very helpful and give great suggestions. Jay goes out of his way to make you feel comfortable and enjoy the food. You can tell his top priority is that you enjoy the food he makes and I cannot give a higher recommendation. I eat here several times a week just because of the quality of the food. If I could give it 50 stars I would
Give it a try and you will definitely get hooked and addicted to their authentic Indian cuisine whether you are Indian or non-indian, you definitely will enjoy and they can gladly explain you everything off the menu and give great recommendations!!!!
Definitely try the...
Read moreThis is an edit to my old review below this time I got some promo and decided to give a try again here but I ordered malai kofta and butter chicken, it was absolutely delicious and good portion sizes I was very happy about my order this time so I am bumping to 5 stars. I am not sure about how they make biriyani but I will definitely order these entrees again.
I made a uber eats order and ordered a chicken, lamb and vegetable biriyani, all of them were absolutely terrible, there is nothing good I can say about them. The rice was so sticky, the lamb was old and hard, the biriyanis served at buffets used to be much better than the one I got from this restaurant. It is so unfair to cook worse food like this and sell it to customers. I have never seen a biriyani which is mixed and stirred with eggs. The packaging they provided was so cheap like the once they used to give in indian temples with free food, the packaging would not have been a concern if the food was great but since the food was below par, it has given me a very bad impression about this restaurant, all my family members were extremely disappointed and mad at me for choosing...
