They had been there over 30 min waiting for our sub. When I asked one of the young adult workers why it was taking so long, he said there were several orders before ours. I told him how long weād been waiting adding that fast food should be fast.
He said Firehouse Subs isnāt really āfast foodā but more of an āin between placeā. Not so! I said. It IS expensive (over $17 for a large sandwich combo!)ā¦but no one greets us, gets us a table, takes our order and brings us our food. Subs are also not dinner. I told him if 30 min waits are now the norm, I might not want to come back. He called me rude and said they didnāt want me back anyway and didnāt need my business.
As for the sandwich itself, they ruined it with mustard, which I had told them to omit. It was also wet and soggy, with disintegrating watery bread (they apparently had made it earlier, then left it sitting around until I asked about the long wait). My husband and I split the edible part between us and threw the rest away.
It used to be a friendly place where customers were welcomed when they arrived, waited on promptly, and thanked as they left. None of that happened this visit. The dining room was not particularly full but the crew was busy making sandwiches, perhaps for a catering order. I stood right beneath the "Order here" sign for more than five minutes. A young woman at the counter was busy preparing sandwiches but never so much as acknowledged my presence or said, "I'll be right with you." I've worked in restaurants and in other customer service jobs and I am sympathetic with the staff when they are busy. However, I walked out without placing an order and went across the parking lot to Steak 'n' Shake, where I was greeted immediately, served quickly and out the door and back to work in plenty of time. The Firehouse staff looked unhappy. Unhappy workers usually produce unhappy customers and unhappy customers usually go somewhere else. I'll be back some day to give Firehouse in Cape another chance.
