After looking at the reviews, we decided to try this place out - we were very disappointed. The reviews are so misleading. The portion size is very small - after returning home, my husband had to fix himself a sandwich - we have been to other thai places and never happened where my husband had to fix himself a sandwich after returning home, this tells you the difference between this place and other Thai places like Thai Indy, Thai Nine, there is no menu provided to customers, there is no ambience whatsoever, very small sitting place, we were made to sit next to a table full of dirty dishes (we felt really icky when we sat down as the tables are very close to each other, hardly any space between them), Additional comments after reading the owner's comments: Clearly the owner is arrogant and thinks he can get away with providing anything and customers are supposed to accept it happily. Every other thai place also greet customers nicely and make orders to individual preferences, what you do is nothing out of the ordinary or anything special. When I go to a restaurant, I do not intend to gossip/chit chat with the owner. I should not have to be explained the entire menu which is a total waste of time - customers should be provided with a menu with a description of the item, and if they have any question, they can ask. You explaining the entire menu is in NO way providing family touch. You not being able to clean the table next us which was so close to our table is not our problem, customers need to be seated at a table where the surroundings are clean, not dirty. Had it been cleaned after a few mins after we sat down would not have been a problem. It stayed like that the entire time we were there which was totally unacceptable. I do not know what the portion is for a 'normal' person, but you are in no way to dictate what a 'normal' person's portion should be. Whatever it is, we never had this issue of portion size at other places, which clearly tells that your portion size is...
Read moreCalling this restaurant a "Hidden Gem" may sound trite at first, but it is completely accurate. The address is on 116th street, but the restaurant is not visible from 116th street or any other street. The entrance is from a parking lot on the other side of the building from a street. And beyond that, it really is a gem! It is a really tiny restaurant WITH AN ENORMOUS MENU. (OK, I won't shout anymore. I promise.) My wife and I were going to Indy (from Muncie) and wanted to try someplace new. Siam Star looked promising. When we first walked in, it looked like there was no place to sit and eat, but it turns out that the dining area involves walking behind the counter to another small room. When we arrived there was already a group of 8 there and then another couple arrived, which took up the entire seating area. We arrived at nearly 2pm and intended to just have some appetizers as a lunch. My wife is a vegetarian. The owner is super friendly and super helpful. He immediately pointed us to a number of dishes. We got some vegetarian pot stickers, the chive dumplings, and she got a "small" bowl of Tom Yum soup, which was really not all that small. I also got an order of the Northern Thai sausage. All of them were excellent, and we would both particularly recommend the chive dumplings, which were great. But then we decided to have the mango and sticky rice for dessert, which was ... perfect. Just absolute perfection. If you like Thai food, or might like Thai food, you won't regret...
Read moreMy friend and I were very excited to try Siam Star Asian Express in Carmel. I am always very excited to order Pad Ki Mao (Drunken Noodles). My friend ordered the Boat Noodles with beef which had thin rice noodle soup with beansprout, sprinkle with cilantro and green onion (mild spice). I ordered the Udon Pad Ke Mao with shrimp which had stir fried Udon noodles with homemade brown sauce, basil, onions, young corn, broccoli, bean sprouts, carrots, tomatoes, bell pepper, and egg (medium spice). The food was very fresh, flavorful, lots of texture, and NOT greasy!!! The brown sauce was very good. The only feedback I can give is to chop up the egg so that is is evenly distributed in the dish. The owner and his Japanese wife came up with the idea of using Udon noodles which was an awesome idea. I love udon noodles so I would highly recommend this dish. The owner is super nice, loves to talk, and very proud of the restaurant. The owner is always happy to give recommendations based on his travels and culinary knowledge. Per the owner, the place used to be a pizza place so the restaurant is mostly a kitchen. The place does have a couple of chairs and tables but not a lot of dining area. I would have loved to come in with my family and seat and eat but we will most likely do carry out. I am super excited to come here again! I did not try desserts but that is on my...
