LA Native recently moved to San Antonio. Had an EXCELLENT dinner at Azro and will return again for more. Service was great. Amir was our waiter. Had solid answers to our questions. Furthermore, he was able to take our requests and make recommendations to improve our selections. I had the opportunity to visit North-Eastern Afghanistan and am used to food from that region of Afghanistan. Amir was able to inform us of how that food experience would likely differ from that at his family's restaurant given their history of living in Kabul. We ended up being convinced to change our initial order to the Kabab Combination with Kabuli Palow rice, Afghan bread, and black chai tea. Everything was excellent. Bread was similar to what I recall eating out there (ie great). Amir even came by to give us some tips on how to drink the tea. For dessert we were again convinced to change our order to the Ferni as he had steered us correctly thus far. He maintained the quality of recommendations and we thoroughly enjoyed the dessert even though i am not a dessert guy. Dish was not sachariny-sweet and was quite subtle and enjoyable. Prices were quite reasonable for what we are especially as a night out for two. As an interesting note, we saw 2x "table" areas set aside without chairs for eating in a manner which I associate with cuisine of that region: no utensils, using bread to scoop up meat, rice, and veggies, sitting on the floor, etc. I was terrible at doing that back in the days but perhaps this will give it another shot. This was my fiance's first time eating Afghan or even food of that region. She thoroughly enjoyed the meal which made me happy. Again, I will definitely be back to give them my business.

Years ago, Hubby and I visited @afghancuisineazro for the first time and thought to go back again with Dad. It’s in the same plaza as Sushishima and European Dumplings on NW Military Highway. Mr. Bayat greeted us warmly, sat us down, and took our orders. Dad had Sprite, and Hubby and I both had Chai Nana, hot tea with fresh spearmint leaves. We tried the Appetizer Sampler which was a combo of Bolani Gandana (leek), Bolani Kochaloo (potato), Sambosa, and Mantoo (dumplings). There were 3 of each appetizer, which was perfect for 3 of us. We shared the Chalow Kadu (sweet pumpkin) with white basmati rice and Narenj Palow (lamb shank) with saffron rice, topped with candied orange peels, pistachios, and cardamom. Mr. Bayat checked on us then Amir, his son, recommended the Ferni dessert. First time to try the ferni, a milk custard pudding made with almonds, cardamom, and a hint of rosewater, topped with crushed pistachios. The texture reminds me of a firm flan and the taste reminded me of almond jello. Definitely highly recommended.

I happened upon this restaurant accidentally. I was planning on going for sushi but parked in front of Azro and decided to try. I have not had Afghanistan cooking before so why not give it a try. The inside is nicely decorated and very inviting. The gentleman at the counter greeted me as soon as I walked in, and as there were no other customers at the time, I choose my seating. The menu is not overwhelming, with appetizers, entrees, vegetarian options, and a kids menu. I started with a pot of mint tea, which was delicious and refreshing. As I was undecided between lamb and kebabs, the combination platter was suggested. This was served with a green salad and the dressing is one I have never tasted, and was quite delicious. My entree was better than expected. The meats were seasoned perfectly and the rice beyond words delicious. I will be back to try a few more dishes. So if you are in the area, skip the sushi and stop by and have a meal. You will not be disappointed. I sure was not.

If trying something new, unique, ridiculously good tasting and a bargain to boot is what you want to do tonight, this is the place. There is a mint tea lightly sweetened. Appetizers so good you wonder whether the main course can top them (I tried Mantoo, Borani Badenjan, Borani Kadoo and Leek Bolanee). Sweet saffron seasoned rice with lamb shanks so tender the knife falls through (literally - surprising me when I tried to saw the meat and the knife dropped onto the plate with a clink). Then, because the appetizers and main course were so good, we had to have dessert. The coconut cake and milk custard were excellent. Serving sizes were plentiful and leftovers did not stay in the refrigerator long.

The decor is great - good colors, window treatments and oud music playing in the background. There is a place set aside for folks who eat traditional Afghan style, seated on a raised floor, eating from a common plate using bread as a utensil. When a massive platter with a heap of saffron rice studded with lamb shanks and chicken passed by it had the same impact as the first time you saw a sizzling cast iron plate of fajitas. A great way to impress an adventurous party.

Service is by the family that owns the restaurant: experienced, personal and friendly. I took the opportunity to talk to the owner. After moving from Afghanistan 20 years ago, he ran a similar restaurant in New York with his extended family. Happily for us, he decided to move to San Antonio in 2014 and purchased Azro's to open a location here with his immediate family. Enjoy this restaurant before it becomes impossible to...

The food was wonderful. We got 2 different kabob plates, one with hamburger meat, and one with lamb. Both dishes were very tasty. The rice was absolutely wonderful. The employee we spoke to were very friendly. There are only 2 reasons we are giving 4 ⭐ instead of 5 ⭐: when we walked in they insisted on a mask to walk from the door to the table, about 10ft. It is utterly pointless when everyone in the building takes their masks off at the table. The second reason is they do not offer tap water. I have an issue with my throat that causes me to choke often when eating if I don't drink a lot while I'm eating. We bought a soda for my fiance which came in a can. I do not drink soda. We also bought a yogurt drink for both of us that I liked but it was chunky so was if no help with my choking problem. We bought a bottle of water for me and had to leave before I could finish my meal because I had nothing to drink with it and it would have been ridiculous for us to have to order 3 bottles of water just so I could finish my meal. Not offering trap water is a big deal for me because of the throat issue I have. For that reason I'm giving it a 4 star. The food and employees were great but they need to offer tap water, or some other cold beverage with has no sugar and isn't chunky. The environment was also nice. It was...
