Our last visit to Tony’s, earlier this spring, was not a great experience. Slow service, awfully long wait times, etc. Unfortunately, we had an especially poor experience at Tony’s on 9/30/23. Our group of 8 went downtown to watch the Iowa game (go Hawks!) but found that most all bars/restaurants that we checked were packed. So, we ended up at Tony’s. I’m giving 2 stars primarily because the cheese breadsticks and pizza were good. The service is what really killed our mood. We sat ourselves and did not have anyone come to our table for almost 15 minutes. Generally, a waiter would greet guests within a timely manner with waters. This did not happen. When a waiter did come to greet us, he very unenthusiastically took our drink orders and disappeared without a word before we could order appetizers. When he brought the drinks out, which took about a half hour (most of the table ordered Moscow mules, Vodka waters, and similar drinks), most of us had a sour look on our face when taking the first sip. The drinks tasted like they were 90% alcohol. The restaurant was not playing the Hawks game, and instead had the Iowa State game on the 4 TV’s in our dining area. We politely asked two workers if they could put the Hawks game on one of the TV’s, since that is what we all really gathered for, and were met with semi-rude responses about how they were too busy to change the channel. After the waiter finally came back and took our order, we waited almost 45 minutes to an hour for our food. Within that time frame, the waiter never came back to check on us and we sat with empty drinks. When the food came out, the waiter left it and once again disappeared without much of a word. When he finally came back to take the check, we didn’t so much as say thank you before he barely said thank you and disappeared. They were busy, but not nearly as busy as they should have been for the service we received. I have seen that place packed and that was not the case, there were several empty tables and booths in our dining area. As we were walking out and on our way to a bar, all the group of us could talk about was the poor service - not a great sign. I never leave reviews on restaurants and bars unless I’m extremely impressed or disappointed, but we will not be returning to Tony’s. We might pick up pizza to take home in the future, but this visit was just very disappointing...
Read morePlace is very nice and trendy. Staff is courteous and friendly. I ordered a large pizza which was good, not the best I ever had but it was good. Before the pizza arrived I ordered an appetizer of their garlic cheese bread. It consisted of I think 5 triangle slivers of garlic bread with BARELY noticable amount of mozzarella on it!!! Huge disapointment there and was $6.00!!! Like I said, the pizza was decent but they definitely skimp on the toppings!!! The large pizzas are cut into squares (not sure how the other size pizzas are cut) and each individual sauare gets its toppings. Sooooo each square gets ONE piece of sausage, pepperoni, a green pepper etc etc etc. That being said, you basically eat each slice as a regular run of the mill cheese pizza with one (MAYBE) two bites out of each slice where you get a mouthful of the toppings.....another huge disapointment!!!! The large I ordered looks to be cut into approx 15-20 3x3 inch squares in which each square gets a topping. So a large gets 15-20 SINGLE pieces of sausage, pepperoni ETC ETC... In a way I guess its a smart way to skimp on the most expensive part of making a pizza...the toppings. I'm used to ordering a pizza at a good pizza joint (the OP or Zoeys or Needs in Cedar Rapids) where the toppings are spread out evenly over the entire pizza and the toppings are plentiful so you get some in every bite you take. On top of the skimpy toppings my large pizza cost over $25.00!!!!! The place is nice and the food is really decent but I like to feel as if I get my moneys worth so I doubt I'll be going to Tonys very often. There's other better places in the CF/Waterloo area to go for good pizza and...
Read moreI've been going here for a long time, and usually get the goat cheese or fungi pizza. Both are amazing and creative. Yesterday I ordered a small goat cheese, which is expensive but usually delicious. After working a 12 hr shift, I was excited to treat myself. Yet, they messed up the pizza. They used a red tomato sauce, which isn't even listed on the menu to be on there. Plus in the past, this sauce is never used. Tomato sauce mixes poorly with sun dried tomatoes too. So my pizza tasted aweful. I told the server about it after the first slice, so she asked the cooks how to make that pizza. They could not answer, so she rephrased it saying red sauce or white sauce. They insisted it was red sauce. Said sorry, but that's How it's made. I know it's not made this way though. I've ordered this many times. So I talked to a manager, and he insisted the same thing. All I wanted was for the pizza to be remade, but no that wasn't going to happen. I told him paying 15 for a improperly made pizza that tastes gross is too much. So he refunded me 5. Then had to make rude remakes about how he wouldn't usually do this (refund money of $5), but he feels bad for me. So next time I'll have to special order. As if I'll go back. I live in waterloo, it's easier for me to go to Basil than Tony's. Frankly, Basil is probably better than Tony's too.
Anyway just rude staff and management. Cooks need to review the recipes. Easier to...
