This was my favorite katsu place in nova and I’m hugely disappointed with how it’s gone downhill so fast with the new owners. I’m not sure what they are trying to achieve here but they sure messed with perfection. I got corn cheese, croquettes, and combo katsu. The corn cheese was literally 90% cheese, 10% corn. The seasoning was fine, it was just insanely cheesy with barely any corn. The croquettes used to by my fav. They changed the recipe and left potatoes WHOLE chucks like big chunks and they were not cooked all the way through, leaving hard raw brittle pieces of potatoes in my mouth lol and because how dense the potatoes are (hard and raw) so it was also cold in the center. The old owners had it almost perfectly before with the smooth filing inside. Now to the katsu…..my god the quality is no where near before….the whole point of a “rosu” katsu is that it’s premium quality lean pork. Soon as the katsu arrived I was confused. Pieces looked yellow/gray with purple vein strips and extremely dehydrated/fried/overcooked and skinny which is not the norm. The chicken also was only cut in half? (or they just had a whole bunch of random size pieces of chicken tenders and fried those) then we got a bigger chicken piece with black streaks (blood veins) that wasn’t cut lol it was super not uniformed and random.
Atmosphere: terrible. Before the new owners, it was a cute little Korean restaurant with bright wallpaper and cozy and inviting lighting with K-pop as the playlist. I’m not sure if they’re trying to gentrify the restaurant, but seems like they’re trying to go to fine dining route while cutting on food quality, and raising prices (and playing terrible Starbucks music…..in centreville…in a koreatown strip with majority Korean demographic..) It’s a shame, but I don’t see this restaurant lasting a long time. I will greatly miss the old Kazone.
Service: lovely, the only reason why this review has two stars and not 0 lol very friendly ladies, even the chef came out and apologized because I sent the croquettes back. And they put on k pop (lol) The people seem super nice and they seem like they care about the place so hopefully they can bring some of the old charm back that was loved by the entire nova residents and maybe only then I’ll come back but until then I’ll be looking for a new katsu place with premium quality
Bottom line: to the new owners, the regulars here can tell when you cut corners and when you use cheap products even down to the parsley garnish that’s dried parsley now instead of fresh chopped. I used to come here at least once a month and I won’t be back ever again after yesterday’s experience. I brought a friend who loves this restaurant that doesn’t live in the area and she was so...
Read moreI came here on a pretty hot day with a couple of friends - I was craving some cold, refreshing soba noodles and I saw that Kazone had some on their menu. I had also not been here before so I wanted to try Kazone out and experience it. My friends and I ordered 4 items on the menu and here are my opinions of them below:
Soba Noodles - Cold, refreshing, tasty and filled my craving for cold noodles on a hot, near-summer day. It came with some assorted veggies that complemented the dish nicely.
Cheese Katsu - Crunchy, filled with warm Mozarrella Cheese - overall very enjoyable. Came with 2 sauces on the side as well as rice and and salad.
Chashu Donniri - Probably the most filling of the dishes we ordered, it had chashu (pork seasoned in soy sauce/sugar mix) with a layer of eggs and rice.
Unagi Donburi - Grilled eel with unagi sauce, with a layer of eggs, over rice. I love eel so I definitely try to order it every chance I get. We received several pieces of very tender eel that were pretty tasty.
Overall, I enjoyed the food - it was tasty - and the wait staff was attentive. It might be because of inflation, but the items on the menu were all pretty expensive - and the portions somewhat conservative. The cheese katsu only had 4 pieces, which isn't too filling for one dish, and hard to justify at the given price point. Similarly, the other dishes were a bit pricy for the given portion size, other than the Chashu Donniri. Also, I found it weird that the water comes out...
Read moreAfter seeing a full table and people waiting outside on Sunday night, I decided to visit this restaurant today for lunch. I don’t know where to begin… But let’s start off with the fact that their food was AMAZING.
I ordered a calamari and lunch combo. The waitress started me off with complimentary miso soup and salad. Honestly, I normally do not drink the miso soup at other restaurants, but I actually really enjoyed it here. -Calamari had a hint of truffle oil and had a very nice crunch to it. -Lunch combo: Udon soup tasted decent, but I am more surprised at their katsu. I highly recommend trying their katsu with house-made wasabi and spicy sauce. The two sauces combined enriched the taste of their katsu for me.
Location/ atmosphere: Conveniently located with a lot of parking spaces and at walkable distance to Hmart/ Tours Les Jour/ Gongcha. Interior is painted with dark green color, which set a calming mood to the environment. The restaurant also played a variety of music, which I really enjoyed.
Price: Fair. I would say that their food is priced pretty similar to other restaurants. Consider spending around $20 per person!
Overall, I would highly recommend this place to my friends. A great, delicious restaurant with...
