Today my wife and I along with our three children (8y, 11y, 12y) stopped at the Workmen's Cafe. We were about 50 min away on the other side of Charlestown on vacation. We were looking for great local southern cooking. We were not disappointed.
Angie (owner) was wonderful. We saw the website said the hours of operation were until 4pm but it appeared it was closed at 2pm. We arrived 1:55pm but Angie graciously told us to come in and we can get food to go to take home. We had fried chicken, ribs, pork chop, red rice, Mac n Cheese and peach cobbler (OMG...). Fried chicken one of the best I've had (juicy and moist) and the ribs fell off the bone as I picked them up. Don't forget the dessert! She was out of cornbread when we were there but I heard it was also amazing. Sweet tea was yep, you guessed it... On par of the south! Yum.
Angie fixed us up a variety of food. She was so nice to our kids, giving them samples of food as they so patiently waited for such great smelling Mac and cheese!
We went 45 min out of the way to go here and it was well worth it. The price was very reasonable and Angie was wonderful!
Thanks for making our experience so great and making us feel...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis place is EXCEPTIONAL! Had the best ribs I have ever encountered here. The red rice was equally outstanding, as was the Corn bread. The Mac and Cheese was good, but not my favorite, as it tasted more like a custard, making me think it has some egg in the recipe. Wasn't bad, just not what I typically enjoy. That said it was hot, in fact, all the food was nice and hot and fresh. The ribs must be baked in BBQ sauce as it was deliciously tangy and firmly attached to the meat. No need to pick them up, was easily eaten with a fork as they were the tenderest ribs I have ever encountered, and the flavor, all I can say is OMG! That goes for the red rice too. The blend of spices were seamlessly balanced. The cornbread was sweet and moist. I can absolutely say, this was one of the best meals I...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreReading previous reviews and watching her being interviewed on old tv clips on YouTube, we really wanted to check out her spot. We arrived early so we could pick what we wanted, we arrived 30 minutes before it was set to open. There was another gentleman there also waiting. Short story, we waited an hour past the time it was supposed to open and several customers came and went trying to get in and no one could- door was locked. Her car was in the back, so we know (think 2 cars were in rear). Idk what happened, lights never came on and door didnāt unlock. We just hope sure was ok. We had to leave bc we had an appointment. Maybe itāll work out another time. We saw at least 10-15 people come and leave in that span, they definitely lost business that day (families,...
