Our visit to this establishment yesterday morning will not soon be forgotten. In fact, as I author this review, I find myself still in shock! The manager on duty, a younger to middle aged woman with long, darker hair in a pony tail, is the epitome of rude and unprofessional.
To provide some background, we were visiting Charlotte and met two folks for breakfast that we had not seen in going on four years. Our server was rather pleasant, but the food food was mediocre at best. However, I can overlook what the food left to be desired.
While there, the establishment was notably busy, but nothing that anyone would consider over the top. After our plates were cleared, we sat for a bit to finish our coffee and conversation. Our visit at this point had honestly totaled no more than an hour and fifteen minutes. While in mid-conversation, the manager walks up to the table, not even so much as offering an "excuse me" or any other sort of polite interruption and informed us we needed to leave because people were waiting outside. Her tone and volume, in combination with how she handled this over all, left us stunned and not even able to respond. We paid the bill and left. Noteworthy here is the fact that when stepping outside, there was no one inside nor outside the door waiting. We stood in the parking lot for an additional fifteen minutes or so, and in that time, we observed that no additional customers had entered the establishment.
After collecting our thoughts and "cooling down" a bit, we returned to speak with the manager, who at this point, we did not know was the woman who told us to leave. Our thoughts on the experience were politely, yet clearly and firmly articulated. Her response, garnished with a generous helping of attitude, once again left us in complete disbelief. When asked if she felt it was acceptable to do what she had done, she responded with a short and sharp "yes!" We pointed out that our table, along with several others, were now empty and that no one was waiting. We informed her of her rudeness and unprofessionalism, to which she fired back a "you're welcome" while walking out the door.
Had we seen a line of other folks waiting, never would we have intentionally held up a table and other revenue or tips from the staff. Furthermore, when occupying a table for a bit after a meal, I generally will slip the server or someone on staff a generous extra tip. We were not even given the chance. Let it be known that in Charlotte, there are countless quality places to eat, and service like this will surely prove less than healthy for the longevity of successful operations of this location. The area in which you are located is one where folks can clearly afford to go where they choose, and it will be our choice to not return to this location ever again.
We did manage to obtain a phone number for Will, the supposed owner, and spoke with him. Seemingly, he is going to handle the incident, but we did state we would publish a google review and are simply following through on what we said we would do. If anyone in management above the woman I reference in this review sees this post, I strongly encourage you to coach this individual and perhaps provide her with some growth-promoting opportunities in management and customer service before her presence at this location proves fatal for the...
Read moreGreat place to get breakfast. The atmosphere was nice, the food was excellent, and our waitress was amazing. Decent variety to the menu except I had a hard time finding anything that didn't come with grits as the side. Not a fan, even the name sounds unappetizing. (I know, I know, they're award-winning...)
This place makes like their own signature-type biscuit (also award-winning) with a slight sprinkle of sugar on top and pairs it with an apple butter which was really good as well.
Thank you Flying Biscuit Cafe, for continuing the tradition of the best meal of the day, and putting a delicious spin (definitively Southern-Comfort derived) on a menu that generally pales in comparison.
P.S. Editing my review to address the Cost/Good complaint in other reviews. Flying Biscuit has won awards for some of their menu items The restaurant itself has won many awards THEIR MENU ACCOMMODATES JUST ABOUT ANY DIET RESTRICTION Their items are not the traditional plain breakfast items you expect to find at a majority of businesses in the same market. If you wanted cheap breakfast, make it at home, takes 5 min. If you want an experience to go with it, then what do you expect
When the menu is not JUST eggs, or hashbrowns, bacon or sausage, but utilizes ingredients or flavors like: Chipotle or Tamari Aioli, honey creme anglais, rosemary potatos, organic products, etc... it SHOULD cost a little more If you want cheap breakfast there is always Waffle House (sorry, I like Waffle House also but we all know their menu for from resembles Flying Biscuits) or go to IHOP. Don't knock a good business because of their prices, go somewhere you can afford. This business thrives due to what I would surmount could be no less than great customer service and a solid business model, the basis for which would be directly tied to cost analysis (aka menu-pricing). MEANING, the majority of people have no problem spending a few extra bucks for the extra quality.
Apologies, rant over... you may...
Read moreTried this place out today. We sat at counter right next to open view of kitchen as there was a wait and the counter was available. Service was quick and efficient with plenty of staff. They were all friendly. Our food was good, I had the Turkey Hash and my wife the Biscuits and Gravy. Food came out incredibly fast too. It was fun the watch the cooks cranking out the orders, but did see notice all 3 cooks did not have gloves on. One of the cooks was using his bare hands to plate sausage patties, pick up bacon and even sprinkle food with toppings... Gross.. The other cooks did not handle food directly. I did see the cook who was cracking eggs and frying them pick up a dirty rag from the counter top and wipe his pan with it, then proceed to crack eggs in it. As we finished our meal we noticed a female take charge at the service window and thst the cooks all had sanitary gloves on. Must have been the boss lady and they put them on. Overall the food and atmosphere was fine, yes it's busy and staff are everywhere and we never felt rushed. Please follow thru and insist on excellence in kitchen sanitary practices.
Edit.. Came here a few weeks after above review and can't say my visit was any better. Service was fine, however I was brought the incorrect order. When my order came back my over easy eggs were the runniest eggs I've ever had, barely cooked at all and runny as water. The potatoes were cold and dry as was the biscuit. My wife and friend said the same about their potatoes. My turkey bacon was barely fried either, rather it flopped when I picked it up to take a bite instead of being crispy. I want to like this place I really do. They do cook a ton of potatoes and leave them in a heap on the cooktop which has to be the reason for them being dry and cold. This can be seen thru the open window into the kitchen. I doubt I'll be back as I can get much better breakfast almost anywhere and far better...
