Spanglish Modern Mexican — Restaurant in Chattanooga

I feel the food should be rated among the better restaurants in the Chattanooga area. I had the shrimp chicken and beef fajitas which was excellent. The shrimp though not overabundant were large and very tasty. What stood this dish apart from the others in the area was that the beef and chicken were not cooked to death as is usually the custom in many of the other Mexican restaurants. My wife's had a chicken and rice con queso which she dubbed very good. We started our meal with queso and chips appetizer and when asked about their salsa we were presented with a complimentary Bowl. There recently renovated Decor was definitely an improvement however the floor reminded me of a neglected garage floor. Perhaps this was intentional however it seemed to be a distraction for me. The menu although priced a little higher than most had a number of dishes that you normally would not find at your cookie cutter Mexican restaurant and they certainly appear to be worth a try. Our waiter provided excellent service. I have upgraded my rating to 5 stars since this is the third time we visited this restaurant and had excellent food and excellent service each time. Arnold our server was attentive, accommodating, and did not rush us through our meal. We ordered the exact same menu items as the previous visit and couldn't have been more pleased. My husband, son, and I went in for dinner last night. When you walked in there was a sign saying “please be patient we are understaffed” which is fine that’s how most places are now a days. There were two families in front of us waiting to be sat and when someone finally came over they both left because they were told it was gonna be another 15-20 minutes on top of the 30 they had already waited. We got sat fairly quickly. Our server was kind, but you could tell she was over her shift. We ordered immediately when we sat down. Kids cheesy chicken rice, two orders of birria tacos, a side of rice, and elote. I got the smoky blackberry margarita and I had to literally chug it to drink it. The taste was awful and it was $12, which was crazy to me. The elote was cold and so sour we couldn’t eat it. Almost like it was drenched in lime juice and tajin. You had to pay for chips and salsa. The salsa had a basil taste to it, and the chips were stale and oily. The birria tacos, I’ve made these at home many of times, and had them out.. I understand how their cooked but my tacos were straight mush with all fat and barely any meat. There was no flavor to them all at. Valentina hot sauce didn’t even help. We got checked on once after our food was delivered and that was to ask if we wanted boxes. I left spending $80 and still hungry. Honestly I’m never one to leave a negative review but it blows my mind how this place is rated over 4 stars genuinely. We were visiting from out of town and based on the rating we choose this place to hopefully find some good Mexican food. I ordered the Baja tacos and no where on the menu did it disclose that it contained jalepenos and when it did arrive I noticed it had jalepenos on the tacos. Confused by the presence of jalepenos, I just requested if I could get the tacos without jalepenos and explained they were not listed on the menu. No big deal to me honestly. When the tacos came out again it had ONLY shrimp and tortilla shell. Nothing else so I was confused by that large alteration to the tacos to start. And then I found a shrimp tail in one of the fried shrimp which just really took the cake for grossing me out. I had one bite and informed the server once again. Nothing was remedied. She didn’t apologize and honestly acted like she had no time to hear anything I had to say considering there was only one other table present so definitely not a packed time at 3pm at all. Paid for the meal anyways because my intentions is to not get food I order for free and then she could not provide a receipt or change below a 20$ bill that she was entitled to a 20$ tip energy.
