Read moreMy group was out celebrating a bday. We waited in line for about 10 min with 3-5 other people.
When we got in, after all of us paid their $20 cover, they told us two of us couldnât go in because of neck tattoos.
Which I get that thatâs their policy but security couldâve told us while we were in line, before we all paid cover to get in? Even worse, it was the personâs bday who had a neck tattoo. So we ask the manager in the most non confrontational way for help.
This short man with a bad perm and a sparkly blazer who seems to be trying to cling on to his youth for dear life did not care. He said thereâs nothing he can do. We werenât asking for an exception to the rule we just wanted our money back.
When I asked why we werenât told about the rule while we waited or before the whole party paid cover he just said itâs the rules.
So then I even asked if we can maybe get a credit for next time we visit? He said no. I said, well then should we contact our bank and dispute the transaction? He said sure do whatever you want.
The cashier looked embarrassed and empathetic and offered us to get us in next time, which we appreciate. But the worst thing is the person whose bday it was just left and it kinda ruined the whole night.
We ended up going upstairs to salvage the night and of course, on a Saturday night the club is half empty. Drinks are $15-$18 each and they taste like dive bar poured drinks.
The bartenders were at least nice. Though the vibe this place gave was definitely 21 year olds being pretentious and trying too hard.
The DJ was mid. We enjoyed the music but in the two hours we were there he played 4 songs 3 times each. One of them being Soulja Boy. But each time the song was remixed differently so it wasnât loop. By the 3rd time a song got played we all just looked at each other and felt kinda cringey even being there.
Lastly, there was a guy who was blacked out of his mind. Heâs either an employee or an affiliate because he was at the DJ booth and then behind the rope. He kept trying to talk to my boyfriend and I as he stumbled. We had to push him off of us because he was grabbing me and security guarding the DJ booth saw nothing.
Then the guy comes around with shots for us and we felt so uncomfortable that after we said no thanks he just handed it to me so we walked away and put the shots at the bar.
Iâve had people buy me drinks before, of course, but this guy seemed so predatory and was wasted. I wasnât taking my chances. Though I also wondered why they kept pouring him drinks? He was absolutely wasted even an hour before that.
anyway, we came here for a bday and it literally ruined the vibe. We probably wonât ever be...
Read moreNot sure why this place receives so much hate. I had a pretty great experience here.
Tunnel is a nightclub located in the River North neighborhood of Chicago.
I came here for a friend's coworker's birthday party here and had a good time. We had no issues getting in and finding our friend's group. We came during 11-1130PM so it wasn't too crowded at the time.
As the night progressed, the place got more and more crowded. It was so crowded to the point that it was a hassle to move around and even staying still meant getting pushed by different groups of people. But I can't be upset about a business being successful.
The DJ playing that night focused heavily on contemporary as well as 2000s hiphop. Though there were random transitions to different genres that I was not expecting. IIRC, we heard a random rock song in there or two before the night was over. It was a bit silly but my group loved it. The effects and lights are also one of the strong points of Tunnel.
Bartenders were extremely slow even at times when the bar was empty. Not sure if they didn't see me but it took a rather long time to get tended to. Expect about a 10-15m wait at times and $$ on drink prices. I wasn't able to capture much of the drink selection but it looked pretty standard with no memorable offerings that stuck out.
Restrooms are towards the back (opposite of DJ) and take a lot of wiggling through to get there. There is a restroom attendant on staff and toilets were clean.
Leaving the place was a bit of a hassle. There are two stairs in Tunnel. One is strictly for entrance while the other is strictly for leaving. We got held up by a group carrying an extremely drunk friend down the stairs that took more time than I'd like. Bouncers yelled at people who stood on the stairs without moving.
I'd give this place a 4/5. I'd definitely recommend this place to others and wouldn't mind coming back. Yet, some things felt "off" here keeping it from a 5/5. Maybe a later visit...
