Ordered black hog sausage and fried squid legs for app. Spicy ramen and spicy champon. Snow crab roll and toro roll.
Extremely disappointed about service and portions. Long wait to be seated and for your orders which is to be expected. But orders coming out of sequence is not nice. First served fried squid legs which was good. (Small portions) and then the ramen and champon. My girl ordered ramen and said it didn’t come spicy and the pork broth tasted foul so I tried it and tasted something was off. It was way too much porky taste as you take a sip of broth. Never had that kind of taste before from spicy pork broth ramen. I asked waitress if you could take this off check and she flat out said no and gave excuses like it was only supposed to be mildly spicy (had no spice at all); even after I said i would order another champon because i did like it.
Two rolls I got. after ramen and champon. What a joke. It almost feels dishonest for them to serve these portions. Finger sized rolls 6 pieces for $15 each. I wouldn’t bother ordering anything from the chef’s special menu off of handwritten A4 paper menu sheet.
And then came the black hog sausage at last. Which is an app…All of this for total $92 including taxes and green tea macaroni ice cream.
My heart told me i should not leave any tips but my head told me everyone is having it tough these days so I left 15% tip feeling so dissatisfied. I’m shocked at waitress who refused to take the ramen off check and further investigate quality. At her stone cold face like I was not being fair.
I won’t be returning. Please improve your customer service and portions of menu items. You seem to have loyal base when I read other reviews but surely won’t be getting new customers with...
Read moreI have been coming to this restaurant with my family since I was 4 years old in 1994 after my dad retired from the Navy following his last stint of service in Misawa. While I don’t remember being four eating there, I can tell you every experience I have eaten there has been incredibly enjoyable despite not remembering the first. Beside the food always being amazing including the last time a month ago, they are always incredibly consistent.
Misako, more often than not was the one serving our table for at least 20 years( probably have eaten here with my family 300+ times). The other reviews stating their amazing hospitality are not wrong in the slightest. To the other familiar and long time faces of the staff, I’m sorry I don’t remember your names but you have always provided the same amazing service and food! I’m pretty sure the man behind the sushi bar and grill has been there as long as I can remember.
While I no longer live in Chula Vista anymore I always look forward to visiting two places when I come back: Kanpai(“Cactus Butt” we called it lovingly, as it had a great sign logo of a raccoon with a spikey looking tail in the past holding a lantern, I was sad to not see him the last time I was there, but that didn’t change anything about the experience, food or service!) and home.
Thanks again for being the best Japanese restaurant I’ve ever been to (including a...
Read moreEnglish speaking staff personal que habla español 日本語を話すスタッフが多くいます。 If you are in the mood for traditional japanese food, this is the place for you. Kanpi brings the best of Japan's food to San Diego with their authentic japanese cooks, sushi chef, and wait staff. The staff are very friendly and attentive. For my military members coming back from Japan missing the food, this is the place for you. Onto the food.
California rolls Cruchy Veggies Sesame after taste Fresh avacado Pack in well rice wrapped roll It's not the best California i have had but really delicious and fresh.
Curry udon Very mild spice Carrots are soft but not mushie Meat well cooked and very tender Curry is a mild thickness, not soupy Noodles are soft and delicious It's very filling.
Miso soup tastes a little different every time but has a sense of being freshly made with just the right amount of tofu and seaweed. The green onions are crunchy with a freshly cut smell.
Bento box Rice is fresh and hot Teriyaki Beef tastes a little smokey like yakitori cooked on a grill. The meat is tender and easy to chew with a very select amount of fat that melts in your mouth.
Overall, I will always recommend this place as the closest to authentic japanese food that you can have in San Diego as you can get without being in Japan, and I constantly go...
