Skyline is one of five major chili destinations in Cincinnati, and is probably the most well known. The locals I spoke with told me that they are the best choice for Coneys which are their version of a chili cheese dog.
The portions are extremely reasonable by American standards, and the staff are very friendly and efficient. You will get your food FAST. Chili in this region is made with cinnamon and a modest amount of chocolate, and it's as famous and popular as McDonald's, if not more so. This location was the original, and there are now something like 160 of them.
I had a small size "5-way" which means I added onions and beans, and a "Coney" without the mustard. It was suggested to me by a coworker that I add the hot sauce and oyster crackers.
It was all right. I think I would eat it again if I were in town, but it's not something I'll ever crave. The flavors are very mild, which I'm confident is appealing to some, but I have an almost perfect palate and was raised in a culture that prefers complex flavors. The spaghetti is not al dente, the cheddar is not sharp. It isn't even mild. The chili itself is an unusual, uniform consistency due to the ground beef being crumbled into water, creating a more paste-like texture overall. The hot dog is not beef, which you would normally need in order to compliment a chili. Together the dish tasted like earnest, reliable cafeteria fare, and was reminiscent of being in public school for me. The hot sauce is like a more nuanced Texas Pete.
If you're in town, you definitely need to experience this local favorite, but don't expect to be bowled over. The whole thing was great fun, and I wish I had been able to buy a T-shirt but they were sold out, likely due to the influx of visitors for the annual Blink...
