The staff is friendly, and the food is tasty. The restaunt touts several gluten-free options for dishes so well on the main menu that I didn't realize they had an even more spelled-out gluten-free menu upon request (I have Celiac and a dairy allergy, among other food allergies). I actually found this part out after asking what I though was an easy question to confirm on the menu (are the corn tortillas gluten-free or fried with flour?).
At first, the server was helpful in going back to ask the cook about preparations of a couple of dishes. When she came back, she told me the cook stated the corn tortillas were flour tortillas, and she topped it off with "but it's his first day". Then she told me about the gluten-free menu, and that the item I inquired about is on there so it must be fine.
This just made me feel uncomfortable and regretting that I said anything about having a gluten and dairy allergy, because it made me not trust what the cook would make. I also just didn't want to come off difficult or demanding (it was busy and my boyfriebd and I definitely werent her only table). So I went ahead and ordered the breakfast nachos, stressing the fact I had a gluten and dairy allergy, hoping it was all a misunderstanding and that hey, if it's on the gluten free menu it should be fine (which really, no one should ever have to do if they simply have dietary restrictions). I omitted a couple of dairy items from the order, asked for the pulled chicken that I could choose in the dish, And hoped everything turned out okay.
Food comes out, and I see half-way through my meal that there is no chicken hiding anywhere in what I ordered, either. I just thought it was odd to omit chicken, when it's clearly a choice out of two meats for the dish on the menu. However, I felt I would come off as plain difficult if I said anything to my server because really, the food tasted just fine. I was really hoping I found chicken in there somewhere (which in actuality would have been a considerable part of my dish). So I literally didn't say anything - I just let my boyfriend converse with the server, and we went on our way.
Overall, my visit to Wild Eggs was frustrating. Surely, for a restaurant to accommodate so many different dietary needs, it was as if the staff (or maybe just this one server) wasn't adequately trained to handle when people ask questions. On top of it all, she blamed the cook for her lack of understanding.
Yes, the food came out great, and my boyfriend loved his dish. He said his mimosa came out perfect - just the right amount of orange juice and champagne. I just hope this one server is the ignorant exception to an otherwise diet-savvy...
Read moreMy group of 4 waited 20minutes for a server to acknowledge us at the central table of the empty restaurant. I ordered the Choc of the Morning drink, and it was by far the worst mixed drink I've ever had (and I mixed cranberry juice and tequila once). When I finally flagged the waitress down who had walked by our table a handful of times without glancing our direction, she was combative about taking the drink back with 3 sips missing (my first sip, second sip out of disbelief at how bad it was, and third sip from my wife out of her disbelief at how bad it could be - we collectively described it as brown milk water). I asked for a coffee as a replacement. My wife described this as coffee that was made with (at least) yesterday's grounds.
Our food finally arrived. Our friend had ordered the chicken and waffles and got something that looked like a grilled chicken cutlet with a Belgium waffle. She was not enthused.
2 of us ordered the Mad Platter. It was so bad to the point that our other friend suggested that he actually might not like pancakes. I pleaded with him not to judge his own tastes based upon this poor showing of flavorless flour that literally "thumped" when my metal knife hit one to spread the butter.
In a place called Wild Eggs, I ordered my eggs scrambled soft with cheddar cheese. They were scrambled hard with cheese and had the unmistakable taste, color, and texture of carton eggs.
All in all, 0 out of 5 stars if I could rate that low between the poor service, the cartons of iced coffee and "fresh squeezed" orange juice my friend witnessed them pouring from, and the food. The saddest part is that everything LOOKED really great (except the chicken), but I guess the shoe polish they put on burgers for advertising shoots don't go down...
Read moreWild Eggs is a regional chain specializing in breakfast and lunch. There are currently three locations in Cincinnati. My family and I recently visited their newest location downtown on 4th Street in the ground floor of the Great American Tower.
We found plenty of tables available upon our 11 AM entry, something that cannot always be said about some of the other local spots. However I feel that this could change quickly as it was much more crowded on a second visit.
I had already eaten a small breakfast earlier in the day, so I went for one of their lunch options. Their Reuben can be made with either a half-pound of lean corned beef or turkey breast. It is topped with Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Russian dressing between slices of toasted light rye ($11.99). This is served with your choice of fries, chips, or skillet potatoes. I went with skillet potatoes as it is not something you can often find during lunch. Overall this was a solid lunch option.
My wife went with one of their more creative options, the Trippin' Chickin' Crepe ($10.99). This features savory crepes stuffed with pulled chicken, spinach, and wild mushrooms, topped with white cheddar Mornay and smoked paprika. This was outstanding! I'm always a sucker for Mornay sauce and this was delicious, and also very filling.
Our daughter really enjoyed having a kids omelet option that was filled with cheddar-jack cheese, and served with fresh fruit, and toast ($3.29). While our son stuffed himself on a short stack of two fluffy pancakes topped with powdered sugar and syrup on the side ($2.99).
My family has really been impressed with Wild Eggs so far and we will return soon. There is a location in Oakley even closer to our home so we may head that...
