Went with my boyfriend for the first time. Asked if we could have outdoor seating, but since we did not have reservations they didn't have anything out front. They did have seating upstairs on a patio, but said there would be nothing available until 7:15. When I asked my boyfriend what time it was because I wasn't really sure, he said it was 6:45. I asked our waitress if we could wait for something upstairs since it was only half an hour and she said there was nothing available for the rest of the evening. Hummm. Asked a lot of questions about different items on the menu, because it was our first visit. Also ask questions about the comment that was made at the bottom of the menu as it was nice enough to state that if using a credit card there would be a fee, which is normal, but a discount if you used cash. The fee is 3% of your order, which is normal. But the waitress kind of gave me a blank look when I asked what kind of discount you got if you used cash. Lol We ordered French onion soup and lobster corn chowder. Very good. Ordered calamari Frito, fresh never frozen cornmeal crusted rings finished with cherry and banana peppers fresh basil and black olives paired with smoked jalapeno aioli for dipping. Received the rings and all other items were pureed into some thick soup-like bowl, no hint of smoked jalapeno. This did not taste good at all. When I asked where the cherry and banana peppers and black olives were they said they were in the bowl. Not the norm for calamari Frito. What we wanted was the calamari rings with cherry and banana peppers fresh basil and black olives. Which we did not get for $20. I did ask if we could get some banana peppers and red peppers so that we could edit to the calamari. They said they only got enough in to make the sauce they served it with. That was actually very odd, because if they do everything fresh they should have the items that are listed on the menu. I asked for lemon so the calamari wouldn't have to be eating dry and they did bring me three slices of lemon. We also ordered the poke tuna wonton nachos. I cannot eat cilantro so the waitress offered to put the salsa on the side and have them add extra sauce and Sriracha, so it would not be dry. That was very nice of them, but when the bill came they charged us for the extra sauce and Sriracha which she did not mention when she said they would be happy to do it. She did however take it off at the end. She was not happy. When I mentioned again about the calamari and how we were not happy with it because it was not served the way it was displayed on the menu they said they didn't do anything traditional. I think that should be stated on the menu so that people could ask questions about what is their way of making different items. They also served lukewarm water without ice, which I thought was very odd. It was very dark & when I went to use my utensils they were stuck to the table. Which was also very odd. Not a very pleasant experience. And very expensive for...
Read moreThis was one of the most disappointing dining experiences we’ve ever had. We kept hoping things would improve as the meal went on, but unfortunately, they never did. I’m not someone who often writes negative reviews, in fact, I usually try to highlight the positives. But in this case, I feel a responsibility to share our experience.
To start, the service left a lot to be desired. We weren’t offered water until we specifically asked, and our table was never cleared throughout the meal. Plates were stacked up, and when the busser brought our food, he simply slid the dishes onto the cluttered table, nearly knocking the dirty plates into our laps. I had to sit holding a plate in my hand while waiting for the waitress to come assist us.
We ordered a Manhattan, but it was missing Vermouth, which is a basic ingredient. We also ordered the calamari fritto, which was completely flavorless. The breading lacked seasoning, and overall, the dish was very bland. The “tartar sauce” that came with it was just plain mayonnaise, and the banana pepper dipping sauce didn’t taste like banana pepper at all.
The carne asada was equally underwhelming. It was served with orzo and “fire-roasted” corn, but the corn tasted like a cheap, store-bought salsa, definitely not freshly prepared. The steak seemed old and overcooked, as if it had been sitting under a heat lamp for too long.
We also ordered the ahi tuna, which came with “rice cakes.” Not only did the flavors not complement each other, but the rice cakes were dry and hard like leftover rice that had been left out all day. For the price we were paying, the quality simply wasn’t there. In fact, we couldn’t even finish our meals, which is extremely rare for us.
Some subpar food might be forgivable if you’re only paying a small amount. But when each entrée costs around $30, it’s perfectly reasonable to expect a certain standard. Unfortunately, this restaurant failed to meet even basic expectations.
To be fair, our waitress was kind and mentioned that we should’ve said something earlier so she could have helped. However, after reading other negative reviews and seeing how the owner responded to similar feedback, we’re honestly relieved we didn’t voice our concerns during the meal.
We only hope that instead of responding defensively, the owner takes our review to heart and uses it to improve their...
Read moreWe ordered the Ahi Tuna Nachos and they tasted awful. I work in a restaurant in Rochester and normally never send things back, but both my boyfriend and I agreed that we couldn’t stomach the nachos because something about them was sour and fishy. The tuna was grey in color and seemed to have turned so we let the server know. I tried to be as nice as possible and even apologized myself, but the server was clearly put off and only responded by saying “I’ll ask the chef.” She also tried to say that it was that color because it’s “poke” (which she pronounced wrong), so I told her that I was aware - I’ve eaten tuna a lot over the years and it’s never tasted like this. The “Ahi Noshos” at Nosh in Rochester is one of my favorite dishes in the city and is almost identical to the ingredients in this dish and has never tasted like this. I frequent Poke Sushi in the South Wedge of Rochester (amazing!) and even eat tuna tartare at the restaurant where I work frequently. Never have I had tuna that tasted like this. A few minutes later the chef (I assume) came up and said he just tasted the tuna and it’s “fresh as can be.” He was super rude and again I just apologized because I’ve experienced when guests are rude about sending things back and never want to be that person. The chef left and both my boyfriend and I felt super uncomfortable, like we had been scolded. What was the point of him coming up to tell us we were wrong? Even if the tuna hadn’t gone bad, something about the dish tasted fishy and sour and was not enjoyable, so why not just apologize (or just say okay) and move on? Instead they were rude to us and made us feel unwelcome. Now they’ve lost two guests, the sales of whatever we were going to get for dinner last night, and any future patronage of myself/people we know. It’s just bad business practice. We ended up asking for the check and leaving. Ill never go back unfortunately. It’s sad because on previous visits I did enjoy the food, but I won’t support a business that treats...
