This is the third summer we have visited Kingston’s historic waterfront and stopped for lunch at Savona’s. Since Covid they have been allowed to add street side seating and boy have they done a good job jazzing it up. Since the waterfront is visible from the restaurant you now have more opportunity to enjoy the boats passing. They offer an updated classic Italian and affordable lunch menu. The handmade garlicky and buttery bread sticks they serve pre meal encourage you to soak up every ounce of the tangy mixture. Though my husband has tried several items on the menu, this last time, Chop Chop Salmon Salad which he said was delicious and the blackened salmon juicy. I enjoyed the Chicken Milanese Salad as usual but I switch out the Italian vinaigrette, which I find a bit too sweet for my taste. We used the “to go” bag the next night to carry a picnic dinner to an outdoor band concert in another town. A woman approached us to say she had noticed the bag and wanted to talk about how much her and her husband enjoy eating at Savona’s at their other location in Red Hook. We had a delightful conversation, I guess, this only confirms how good Savona’s is if you have folks 50 miles away talking about it.

My Local17 retiree group had a bus trip on the Rip van Winkle. We then went to lunch at Savona‘s. We were an hour and 20 minutes early for our reservation. The waitress and management at Savona’s did not even batt an eye when I came in with 16 people and an early reservation, they quickly got our table ready and sat us all down in a very timely fashion. I just wanted to say how much we appreciated the prompt service and also not getting snarky because we were so early..our waitress, Mary was amazing! everything was handed to the right person, she knew who had what. 😍 And then there was the food, being a Tuesday. It was very busy, which gave us a good heads up that we were in the right place. Everybody ordered a different array of food, and everything came out piping hot and freshly made. I’ll give this 10 stars.

Started with a soup and appetizer. The soup was great, the eggplant stack unfortunately was unseasoned, bland, and undercooked. I expressed to the waiter that they missed the mark today ( I’ve had this multiple times) he took my plate and said he will let the kitchen know. I had taken two bites from the dish and was hoping for a new one…. Or to just have it removed from the bill. What you see in the picture is what was cut off that I ate. They charged me for the entire thing, took the plate didn’t even offer to take them home, not that I wanted to. Bad problem resolution. $25 for a bowl of corn soup. Not a fan anymore.

First of all, we were not greeted by our server for about 15 minutes. We ordered drinks while we waited for the rest of our part to arrive. A very nice woman brought the drinks to us, not our server, and we didn't see the server again for another 15-20 minutes and had to ask the bus girl to get her. We ordered and appetizer and that was delivered by a young man and again never saw our server for another 20 minutes. When we ordered, I asked the server for shrimp scampi on linguine not spaghetti and she said that was no problem. My daughter ordered chicken pepperoni Parm with ricotta cheese added to it. My niece ordered lemon salmon with risotto. Out meals arrived quite fast and not served by our server but a young man. My scampi was on spaghetti not linguine liked I asked, and when I told him I asked for linguine twice, he didn't acknowledge that I said something to him. My daughters meal didn't get the ricotta on her chicken like she asked, and when she told the young man, and woman brought a gravy boat of cold ricotta and set it in front of her. So was she supposed to add the cold ricotta to the hot chicken? The sauce on her pasta and chicken had no spices and tasted like the tomatoes were poured out of the can onto the pasta. Awful sauce. When the server came over, I told her I ordered linguine and she said it is linguine. I said no it's spaghetti and I asked if I could have linguine and you said absolutely. She goes back to the kitchen, comes out and says the cook said what I have is linguine. Now I am Italian and I think I know the difference between pastas. She made no effort to fix or apologize for the error. She chose to argue that I was served linguine. She left the table saying there is to much going on in this place tonight and kept walking. When she came back maybe a half hour later she saw my daughter had not eaten her meal and never asked why or if she could fix it. Nothing. Just took the plate and left. My nieces salmon was bland and the risotto was awful. Not even able to eat it. The sauce tasted like maybe soda. We were not asked if we wanted coffee or dessert, I asked for the check and when the check came all of the meals had been put on one check, when we ordered our drinks we told her there would be two separate checks at the table. I asked her to separate them and she unhappily took the check and let it be known she was mad. I get the check and I see I have been charged $2.00 for ice in my drink, a baileys. When I asked our server about, this she was pleased to say that's what they do. Needless to say our entire experience at Savonnas downtown, was an absolute disappointment from Start to finish. On top of it all it was so hot inside the dining room that we were uncomfortable. I have a picture of the receipt I am gonna try to add to this post. We will not return and I will be sure to let people know about this experience and how poor our service and food was....

I am beyond disappointed! My sister just called me today to let me know they will never go into your place again! See when you give someone $100. Gift card it because, you want them to go out and have a nice time. My sister & her husband came into your restaurant yesterday to celebrate their wedding anniversary; they were not aware they needed a reservation, however, they got sat with-in a few minutes. It was nice you could give them a table, however; no one went over to greet them or welcome them to your restaurant. Eventually, a man in his 40’s they are guessing asked if they had been helped; they told him no & the server took the order. When they ordered soda; they said it felt as thought the server was put out (Attitude); which should never be in issue; when you get a guest in your place that takes a seat you should never judge them for what they order, they could be on a medication; could be in recovery for alcoholism, there is a huge list of things. (T.I.P.S or Serve safe might be needed for this server) Anyway, my sister told me their server was MIA and other servers or staff brought their Steak & other things out; she sat their with an empty sprite; no one offered to get her another soda; which by the way she wanted. So, I asked my sister, “did a manager or owner stop by your table? Did someone check back to see how your food was? And will you go back again?” Answer to All was, No! My sister took 2 pieces of cheesecake home with them that she was finally able to order. She only left the server $12. On $80-$90 check! I’m really, really disappointing in the way my sister & brother-in-law were treated at this location; we have been going to your other location for years; where she will be using the remainder part of her gift card. You would think in a place that is suppose to be more upscale you would have better, more professional servers. And actually do something when it’s a special occasion for your guest. You have several good reviews about your restaurant & staff and I really thought this would be a good experience; but, it turned out to be the opposite! Server Sucked; Chef made great meals & other supporting staff...

UPDATED INFORMATION BELOW

Had an early business dinner yesterday. We were seated at a table by the staff. Shortly after our meals were finished, before our server offered us dessert or even offered another drink we were forced to surrender our table. The place was empty, so I was perplexed, my prior experience dining out, usually I am offered dessert before and definitely asked to pay before I make room for the next guy. Worst part of this ejection, we were surrounded by empty tables. Whomever was so important never showed while we were still there. I always loved the food but next time, I'll go someplace else. Anyplace else. If you dare go, make sure they will let you finish your meal before taking your table away, I can not imagine what they would have done if there were no other tables available.

UPDATED INFORMATION

THEY TRAIN THEIR STAFF TO POLITELY TELL YOU YOU CAN'T SIT THERE ANYMORE

Hi, Kevin.

Again, I apologize that you were asked to relocate following your dinner. The guests that arrived at the bar have been coming to us for 15 years and always sit at that particular table. We’ve trained our staff to politely ask a table to relocate and buy a round of drinks for them when something like this occurs, which I understand is what happened with your table, you were asked to relocate after you were finished with dinner, you moved tables and we bought you a round of drinks for the inconvenience. While I am happy to send you a $100 gift card, I cannot refund your meal.
