This is a tentative five star review. After I have more dishes I may come back and amend it to 6 stars.
The food here is a bit of a blend between Thai comfort food and western comfort food. What this means for customers is if you are a thai food nut like me you'll have dozens of new dishes you've never had before and if you are new to thai food several of the dishes won't be too far off from american food you like with thai flavors.
As most peekskill diners know this is one of the best locations in the city. The owners and staff are warm and friendly. Most importantly, the food hits hard like comfort food. The drink menu is great too.
I have to go back and try more dishes.
About 10 years ago a new thai spot opened near my university called Up Thai. The food was incredible and I gave them one of their first reviews and went back many times. Today it's incredibly busy. I went once after 9pm on a weekday and still had to wait 45 minutes. Having Cassette today I feel the same way. this place is special and worthy of praise. The menu is full of fresh takes on thai food, the flavor is there, and the attention to detail is borderline OCD.
My only words of caution are don’t expect a typical Thai restaurant menu with a. List of curries and proteins. This place is a Thai restaurant the way a place like O Mandarin is a Chinese restaurant. It’s 21st century original dishes. Give yourself extra time to read the menu. I saw only a limited menu and there are so many options and dishes I’ve never heard of. Everything sounded so good it gave me analysis paralysis. I asked the owner about the Khao Moo Krop and she said it was her favorite dish. Now it is my...
Read moreWe’ve been eagerly waiting for this to open in the old Ramenesque spot on Main Street, and from the moment we walked in, we knew it was worth the wait. The branding is on point, and the restaurant itself did not disappoint.
We started with the Thai Iced Tea and the Pink Jasmine Date Milk Tea—both absolutely delicious and refreshing.
For starters, the Cassette Kanomkrok was a revelation: a tender scallop perched on a bite-sized coconut pancake, all atop a crisp slice of fried lotus root. The flavors were unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. The Som Tum Thai, a perfectly prepared papaya salad with a bright, tangy dressing, was equally refreshing.
For mains, the Wai Yao Noodles stole the show—delicate pink noodles tossed with shredded omelette, caramelized pork belly, sweet sausage, bean sprouts, and more. OMG. WOW. The Emerald Short Rib was next-level comfort: fork-tender beef bathed in a coconut and green curry sauce with bamboo shoots and baby Thai eggplants. A religious experience.
Dessert was the Bua Loi Ice Cream—creamy coconut ice cream floating in coconut milk with heavenly glutinous rice balls, like tiny mochi. Pure bliss.
We were warmly greeted by one of the owners, Beer (“like the drink”), whose passion for the restaurant was evident in every detail. She explained they’re starting with a limited menu of signature dishes, with Thai classics to follow. Honestly, I could eat everything on the menu.
Peekskill finally has a proper Thai restaurant—and it’s as hip as it...
Read moreToday was first soft opening day for Cassette Thai Diner downtown Peekskill. We just came back, and I’m here to tell you Peekskill has a brand new, exciting, AMAZINGLY good restaurant! It’s not just a good Thai restaurant. It’s a good restaurant period! Everything was executed well- especially for first day of soft opening. They did a great job with decor. Even the music playlist was perfect, creating a nice contemporary atmosphere. It’s not your standard Thai take out place with cliche buddhas, Thai music, and standard curries with choice of beef, chicken or shrimp. It’s so SO much better. The menu has so many interesting dishes we had a hard time choosing which ones to get as our first (but certainly not our last). One of the owners said they’ll be adding more dishes, so don’t fret if your favorites aren’t there yet. Try something new. The flavors on everything were fresh and bold and creative Finally! I’m just so excited to see them succeed in all their choices. It’s intentional, quality, reasonable price, and tasteful. Pictured: Drinks: Thai ice tea, pink jasmine date milk tea. Apps: Cassette Kanom Krok (wonderful), Som Tum Thai Papaya Salad (i asked for white person medium, Thai person mild). Mains: Wai Yao Noodles, Emerald Short Ribs (both incredible with wonderful flavors). Dessert: Bua Loi Ice cream (perfection. Sweet but not too sweet). Even the way they packaged our to-go leftovers was creative and thoughtful. Looking forward to all you Foodies to go soon and see...
