Averna Italian Steakhouse — Restaurant in City of Rye

I wanted to really love the food here so much because of how many great reviews they have. Me and my husband were there last night we had reservations for 8pm and were promptly seated once we checked in with the host. We were seated by the door where the food comes out I imagine near the kitchen, at first I was a bit nervous because they were coming out with hit food and very closed to me after they dropped a fork on my foot and a couple of glass of wine I had relaxed more. Our waiter B explained what the specials were for the night and he did a good job taken care of us. We started with the bacon and the tuna tartare and this is why they get two starts only because that was the most decent dishes we had plus the service. We then had their wedge salad which it was just ok, so I figured it’s a salad so let’s move on. I was so excited to try their halibut which it was the special for the night and my husband had the Bone in NY strip, we decided to go that route so we can try different dishes for the side we got the cream of corn and mashed potatoes. So let me start by saying the halibut was very very dry and had no flavor, the steak came out Luke warm which I was very surprised since every steak plate that was coming out was coming out sizzling. A gentleman in a great suit came to our table and ask how was our food I then proceeded to tell him that our food was not hot he then apologize and took the steak plate and I guess they warmed it up for us because then it became too done for us other high end restaurants would have done this different.We then just went with the flow at that point just wanted to finished whatever we could eat and just finished our bottle of wine. The same gentleman came to ask again how was our food and At that point I was already dissatisfied and just said it’s good maybe it was a mistake from me because he should know how Our meal was really going at that point. I was reallly really looking forward to having an amazing and tasty meal but I didn’t get that at all, me and my husband talk on our way home and maybe it was because they were super super busy, so we might give it another try maybe not on a weekend night or possibly lunch. I visited Averna Steakhouse last Saturday with a few friends after hearing some good things about it, but sadly, our experience was far from what we expected.To start with, we waited nearly 25 minutes just for someone to come take our order, even though the place wasn’t particularly busy. When the food finally arrived, my steak was cooked completely wrong, I asked for medium rare, but it came out nearly burnt and dry. The fries were cold and undercooked, and the salad looked like it had been sitting out for hours soggy and unappetizing. Service was also disappointing. The staff seemed disinterested and tired, never once checking in to ask if everything was okay or if we needed anything else. What made it worse was that when we politely mentioned the issues with the food, the response was very indifferent no apology, no effort to fix anything. For the prices they charge, I honestly expected better quality and at least some level of customer care. In this case, you don’t get what you pay for. Wow!! What an amazing experience. My family and I celebrated Easter with wonderful food, wonderful service, and wonderful atmosphere. Sam, the owner, has an incredible reputation in the restaurant industry. DEFINITELY, check out his story!! He’s an amazing man. A party of eight is never easy. But tonight, everything was wonderful. And we will be back!! B, our server, great guy, great personality. He made the night right. Staff was GREAT! A series of appetizers consisting of calamari, prepared well, tender not over cooked, thick cut bacon, lobster crab cakes and a few others. Excellent! Our meals were excellent, with dishes extending from wild salmon, to rare tuna ahi, which was amazing, seared so well, fantastic piece of tuna, to filet mignon prepared to perfection. All the dishes were served in a well orchestrated fashion, nothing overlapped, as it is clear they want you to enjoy the meal prepared. Coming from the city, it is sometimes difficult to find a solid restaurant, one that you want to frequent. Averna’s is DEFINITELY a place that fits this profile. You just know you want to come back.
