Just moved here from San Diego and have been looking for good Mexican food. I have spent a large amount of time in Mexico from border towns to the furthest South and have been spoiled with good food. So when we moved here I was on a quest to find something as close as possible.
The atmosphere is fun, colorful and festive. This is not a place to go for an "intimate" setting as a previous reviewer complained about, this not that type of restaurant. This is a family run franchise that has its roots in Jalisco, Guanajuato, and Guadalajara and you get that feel when you look at the way he tables and chairs are painted and the restaurant is decorated.
I had the carne asada street tacos with with a side of chips and guacamole. Tacos were very flavorful with meat that was trimmed nice and lean and cut up into small pieces. The tacos came placed in a small frame that held them upright and partially folded, making them easy to prepare and eat. The tacos also came garnished with onion, cellantro and the plate came with rice, lettuce, pico de Gallo, and beans. The beans were not the traditional mashed refried that many people come to expect but rather they were prepared in a cup as a soup, with bacon and peppers, which is another traditional way of serving beans.
The guacamole was flavorful, and prepared nice and chunky!
I also had the fried ice cream for dessert and let me tell you.....it was to die for. I have tried many fried ice creams and most have an outter coating that is more stale and chewy. This one had a nice thin layer that was brittle and thin. Drizzled with honey, chocolate syrup and sugar it was amazing!
Overall my experience was very good with great food. The only complaint would be that the serving staff seem a little understaffed. Our server was very polite and courteous but seemed to be managing multiple areas and was absent from our table for extended times.
If you get a chance, I highly recommend...
Read moreService was not to my expectations. The wait time was about 5-10 minutes which I wasn’t upset about. But the table service was not very pleasant. My party of 4 waited a bit for basic chips and salsa, but when they came the amount of chips could have fed a small child only.
We then had to wait to order drinks other than water, and there wasn’t a soft drink menu. They had two alcoholic drink menus. So we had to ask about the drinks and we were not given a complete answer. We had to basically guess what they had.
We then had to wait again to actually order our food, which I think is a little overpriced for the content, and the menus were very full, but it just was not going very well for my party and I. We also had to wait a while for our two dishes to come out. And let me add— one of my friends has an eating disorder and is limited to what she is comfortable eating. So we thought she could order from the kids’ menu like you can at Pueblo Viejo and many other restaurants. But, we were notified that to order off the kids menu you have to have two adults and a child. So my friend was not able to order anything besides a doctor pepper which turned out to be more than $3. And one of my other friends wanted kids’ menu too but was also denied so she and our other friend shared a meal. Which was a pain because they charge extra for beans and rice on the side of certain burritos I guess. So they paid about $30 for one plate, and two soft drinks. Not at all worth the price and trouble. My check was almost $20 for one burrito and a water.
The building was not at all busy for a Friday night. So I was just wondering why the service was as slow as it was and why you’re refusing to give a patron a meal off of a menu...
Read moreThis is just my own, personal experience, but I did NOT enjoy my visit at all. I don't give low ratings often, but I do believe this place was very deserving of it. We waited almost half an hour just for our drinks to be served to us while the place noticably not busy. Our waitress was not attentive to refills, and continued to ignore us when we tried to call her over for help, or to order something. The food I ordered included chicken, which I don't recommend to anyone since it was VERY dry--basically inedible at that point, so I ate everything else surrounding it, which wasn't too bad, though when chicken is supposed to be the main part of the dish, it becomes a very disappointing plate of food. When it came to dessert, I chalked my order up to being a bit of bad luck, and figured the dessert would make up for it. What came to the table however was rather sad looking and disappointing in taste as well. The sopapillas were supposed to be drizzled in chocolate, at least that's how they're depicted in the picture advertised and there wasn't even a drop on the side, and they were rather deflated by the time they reached the table, appearing to have been left out a bit before ever reaching us, which isn't too surprising since again, we waited a good chunk of time just to order it, and then even more after--and as a reminder, this place wasn't busy while we were there.
Definitely not going back, and I highly recommend against ordering anything with chicken, or the sopapillas if you...
