The dogs are good, but the service makes me second guess my decision each time.
I have been several times, and I always end up leaving after ordering something that is not quite what I wanted and feeling a little dumb. This time, I spent some time trying to understand why that is. I decided that the attitude of the staff (owner?) and the atmosphere create a false sense of urgency. You order in a tiny room, so there is a line behind you making you think that you have to order right away. You can only read the menu once you are fully inside the room, so you don't feel like you have time to read it. There are no descriptions of what the menu items are. Granted, a simple hot dog does not need a description, but a "Tijuana" probably does. Then, there are extra menu items scattered around the room as if they are specials, and some of them may be, but the one I asked about is apparently always available. As you place your order, you are asked what you want on it. No where is there a list of options. It is assumed that you know what standard hot dog toppings are, so I asked for standard options. They don't have grilled onions and have choices of mustards, both of which are fine, but a simple list of options would have saved quite a bit of discussion. Lastly, the only way to know that your food is ready is to mill around the door and listen for your name to be yelled. The whole time, wondering if that was your name, she just yelled, or was she just yelling at the person ordering?
A little attention to the experience of the customer would change this place from a reluctant occasional stop to a...
Read moreI get it, this place makes me nostalgic also, but come on... this place is disgusting and way overpriced. I've been coming here since I was a kid. The outdoor train patio was always a favorite growing up. Now that I'm older I can look past the train patio and tell that they haven't cleaned the place since I was a kid. The grease on the walls stain not only the paint but the pictures. The amount of dust that is on every picture, or just edge of anything was shocking. The two guys working behind the counter were rude, to say the least. Obviously having a bad day, they would slam stuff around and mope. They rushed us to make our order when no one else was in there. Didn't say thank you for an undeserved tip. That's not the worst of it, they prepare the food in front of you so you would think that they would wear gloves... wrong. One of the 2 put on a single glove. He handled the money with the gloveless hand. It's hot dogs, and it's not that hard to do. While you're standing around waiting for orders maybe do your job and clean the lobby, or next time try not to be so lazy and put on...
Read moreIm sure the ladies came off rude due to the tone of her voice. I felt rushed. I ordered the Italian beef sandwich, and the first thing she said was, it doesn't taste like Chicago because they use a different bread.
I asked for lightly dipped, and it was very soggy. I asked for napkins and was told that one was in the bag, but she gave me another (1). She picked it up with her wet fingers, so it was already soiled and unusable. I also ordered fries that were just shoestring fried. At least they were hot.
I paid almost $22 for this meal. I almost walked out when she told me the total, but I didn't because I'd been craving one for months. Someone needs to update the menu prices on the website. The sandwi e on the site was $8.95, but $14.95 in the store. Im not even sure about the pri e of the fries.
The fries were nice and hot, and the sandwi h was flavorless and soggy. VERY DISAPPOINTED. I will not return...
