Interesting reviews here. I looked at several review sites and foud lots of 5 stars and quite a few one stars, there isn't much in between. I always find that odd, so I was curious to try it.
We were here with a group of about 30, which probably threw off the service, but really shouldn't have. A really good restaurant can manage that many people without a lot of glitches.
To start, we had a nice variety of rolls, traditional French, whole wheat and brioche. All of them were good and served with a nice supply of whipped butter.
We had the basic garden salad. It was mostly iceberg lettuce, which was kind of surprising for a restaurant in this price bracket. It had a few cucumber slices, 3 tiny tomatoes and some strong red onion. I'm a fan of onion in my salad, but found myself taking them out. The dressing, which was a bottled Italian must have been ladled on, as my lettuce was doing the back stroke. As it turned out, both my husband and daughter had almost no dressing, so I must have gotten 3 servings. It was very vinegary, so I only ate the top layer.
For my entree, I had the sirloin. It was a fairly small serving for sirloin, more like the size of a filet, but nice and thick. I ordered it medium rare. It came out properly seared but much more on the rare side than I was expecting. The whole group seemed to have problems with the steaks being the wrong temperature. The waiter set down one steak at a table, then as the diner started to cut into it, he picked it back up and gave it to someone else. Okay, I've never seen that, either. The flavor of the steak was good and it was very tender and juicy.
On the side of the steak were instant mashed potatoes. They were easily identifiable by the absolutely perfectly homogenous and slightly grainy texture along with a bit of "boxed" flavor. The haricot vert were properly cooked, but needed seasoning.
For desert, we had the "Mile High" chocolate cake. The slice was four layers, and about an inch thick. While it had a nice chocolatey flavor, it was just a bit on the dry side.
Overall, it was an average dinner. But seriously....bottled salad dressing and instant potatoes with steaks that go from $30-$50? I...
Read moreNot as good as they used to be. Excellent onion soup. The fish dishes were great. My problem is that I eat a lot of steaks. My favorite being a Ribeye. I chose the ribeye over their specialty of prime rib. First I'll start with the salad. Runyons used to serve a tomato onion "salad" that was so good, that I ordered it instead of a traditional salad. It used to be two halves of the biggest, and best beefsteak tomatoes red and juicy each covered in a large slice of onion. This time it was 3 med sized halves that were pink not red, dry as picked too soon. Next the main attraction the ribeye. As previously mentioned I eat a lot of premium steaks and alot of ribeye steaks. Where once Runyons was know for the best, nothing sub par. Now I can't say if Runyons is saving money buying a lesser grade or if the supplier had switched and given them a lesser grade, ( which the master chefs should have realized), but all I can tell you is that was not a prime grade steak. First let me say that the steak was cooked as ordered a perfect medium rare and had excellent flavor. The cap was small, but the main part of the steak was on the dry side and a little tough as there was no marbling of fat throughout. This was definitely without a doubt not a prime steak and not the quality that would have been served at Runyons in the past, nor should it have been served now. They charge high end prices that I'm willing to pay. But I then expect high end top quality meat. I know meat prices have gone up alot, but if you want to be known a top level steakhouse you must serve top quality steaks! And top quality chefs would have known that this steak was not the quality level that Runyons or any other top quality restaurant would serve. Sorry to the owner for a harsh review, but I must be honest. If the truth hurts, then fix it. 15 years ago my girlfriend and her family were very frequent customers sometimes once a week. This quality would never have been served or tolerated. I would go back once more and hope they regain the support quality they were known for. If not I would...
Read moreVisited there last night and the experience was not so great. I ordered the rib eye special bone in $69 and the steak was dry. I ordered medium Rare which it seemed to be the right temperature but the steak was completely dry, not worth the price tag. One thing that really bothered me was our service from our waitress was not great. We asked for a 2nd round of bread and it never came. Our food was delivered by a food runner and it did not have the typical covers as all other food is delivered which had seemed suspect. Every other time we have been there the food was delivered by our our server on a cart and covered. Here is the worst part considering everything we all have been going through with Covid. I ordered a coke and my wife ordered a Diet Coke after we realized the waitress was spreading germs with the water pitcher and she had to remind her and our food had already came. She was going table to table with the water pitcher refilling glasses from a common pitcher. Each time she refilled a glass the pitcher rim was touching the glass. You could see it and hear it. This means every table that had been refilled could have possibly been infected with Covid if someone at one of the tables was positive and was asymptomatic. At the end of the night we asked for a leftover box and our check. The box was a clear container with no bag which we thought was very strange as leftovers do not typically look that appetizing. But hey at least we didn’t have to bring our own. The waitress never returned to our table we waited for a good amount of time for her to pick up or credit card and she never did. Finally the manager came over and took our card and brought it back promptly. Not sure we will be back. We moved to Fort Lauderdale about 6 mos ago but wanted a little taste of back home and it was not enjoyable. $150 meal was closer to a $50 meal. We have been trying to do our part to help bring restaurants back but the quality is just not here....
