I was so happy when Mokkoji opened up closer to home since the Irvine location was a bit far from me. They also opened in Garden Grove recently, but it is NOT the same. This Costa Mesa location is similar to the Irvine location in my opinion.

Mokkoji is my absolute FAVORITE shabu place. I love the marinated meat, the ability to have a shared plate, the broth, the unlimited veggies (some only), and the goma sauce! I feel like the sauce is EVERYTHING to me. I've had good shabu places, but the sauce makes it and no other goma is as good as Mokkoji's. I do miss pre-covid when we were able to crush our own sesame seeds in the sauce though!

I also get the shared plate, and it comes with so much meat. I also love that we get our own set of veggies and rice ! My go-to broth is the spicy pork broth. I add lots of garlic and it is perfection. ALSO their garlic is crushed so well. It's SO good! I add it to my goma and ponzu sauce as well. The marinated meat also makes it so flavorful as well.

I also am a big fan of their edamame! SO good. Their chicken wings are also super flavorful- but it can be a hit or miss. When it's good, it's great though! We don't always order because the shabu itself comes with so much food and veggies already and we get so full.

Tammy is my absolute favorite server! She is so attentive and asks me what I need before I even get the chance to ask. She is also super quick and I see her go from table to table so quickly and efficiently! Everyone else is super kind as well, so I love coming back for my...

I normally do not write about these type of review because usually my experience at mokkoji has been decent but after yesterday feel like I would have to discuss somethings that we had experience during our dinner. When we got there customer service was great it was during the midpoint and during our last that we started experiencing issues with the servers. In the beginning one of the servers had offered my pregnant friend if she wanted beer??? I understand if you vouldnt see that she wss pregnant but she clearly was pregnant i was just the only one who wanted a beer. But the audacity to ask my pregnant friend if she wanted a beer was uncalled for. Not only that we had to constantly flag the servers down if we needed something and at this point I got up and just got the items we needed because they ignored us. Then when we were about to close out our dinner this asian guy with glasses came to rush us out rudely. Instead of placing our bills somewhere he placed our bill on top of an empty meat plate and was giving us an attitude when we asked him were not going to touch the greasy card and if he could clean the mess on our cards since he dropped into our empty meat plate. My friend and I were in complete disbelief about the service we were getting especially when they were rushing us out and we weren't quite done with our dinner. We felt rushed and were given attitude from the server. I don't think we will be coming back here after receiving that...

First time here and it is an experience forsure. The food was really good, and if you’ve never had it the concept is neat. You prepare your own pot of boiling soup with whatever meat you would like. And throw in whatever veggies you would like as well. I really enjoyed it. It’s a little pricey, but if you want something that is a prepare yourself experience then it’s worth it. The service definitely could have been better especially if it’s your first time cause you really have no idea how it works and they don’t explain anything unless you ask. I wish they would ask you first thing if you’ve been here before and if not they will actually break everything down for you cause it can be confusing. But overall loved the food and I...

First time at Mokkoji Shabu Shabu. We were seated right away and had a great experience during lunch. The presentation was excellent and the atmosphere was very good. The food preparation area and the hot pots were nice and clean. I ordered the beef brisket and my wife ordered the salmon. The vegetables were nicely arranged and tofu blocks were even branded. As an added plus, the brisket was pre-marinaded (I haven't seen that at other shabu diners). The peanut sauce dip was delicious. Steven, our server, was very helpful and responsive. Overall, we had a wonderful time at Mokkoji. THANK YOU!

Stopped by here before heading to the airport. My GF love their other location, so I'm happy that I was able to try them out. Made reservations on Yelp, but it wasn't that busy since it was right when they opened and on a Sunday. I ordered the Pork Belly and Spicy Broth. It wasn't spicy. I loved that the meat was marinated, and it added flavor to the broth. The service was ok, nothing to rave about. I'm a bit confused as I have never been asked about how many ml of wine I want. With a confused look, the server finally said 1/4 or 1/2 glass. Lol. Overall, it's definitely a spot I'd return to.
