I come in here all the time and constantly tip. I prefer to support small businesses. The wait time is typically longer than other coffee shops which I always understood. It’s obviously understaffed. However this morning there was a longer line than usual. I don’t mind the wait. However I noticed what appeared to be the workers friend, got her order before me when I ordered prior. She as always doesn’t put the syrup so I always ask her to put it on after she hands it to me. I also didn’t get the right drink but she said I didn’t order it decafe. I am forgetful sometimes so I must’ve forgotten to mention decafe. I didn’t make a fuss about it. But when I asked about the girl behind me getting her order prior (she was extremely friendly with her and with me it’s like a flip switched automatically, and it’s not the first time that has happened) she explained it was quicker for her to do it that way. I guess have me wait longer cause “my drink takes longer” I never experienced that before so I questioned her more at some point she began to give me attitude boggling her head around while she spoke and raising her voice. so I turned around and walked away from the conversation while she continued to speak. It was clearly not going anywhere. No apologies. Only justifications and attitude for even questioning things. I tried to act like I didn’t know any better cause “she’s a barista”. It was evident she was annoyed for questioning her. She then told me have a good day bye in a very condescending tone while I was already walking away. She just wanted the last word. And basically was shouting while I was almost at the door. It’s not the gal with curly hair but the one with her hair tied up who looks like she’s constantly in a bad mood. Though I understand I may not understand the situation as to why she served the other customer before me when I was already waiting over 10 minutes. She could’ve handled the situation differently. It was no excuse to talk to me the...
Read moreI write for a music and coffee blog called Crooners In Coffeeshops, in which I interview local musicians at local coffeeshops. My writeup reflects the positive experience that I encountered at Tanner's Coffee on our interview date.
Not so hidden on the Sepulveda Strip of Culver City lies Tanner’s Coffee Co. Proudly known as the city’s oldest coffee shop, its warm and welcoming exterior of classic brick and bright umbrellas helps it to stand out against the muted neutrals of the surrounding shops in the vicinity. When you walk through the doors, you feel like you’re witnessing how Tanner’s looked when it debuted with its retro surf decor and vibrant color palette. However, given its exuberant interior and somewhat cramped indoor seating arrangements there is still a sense of homeliness that makes you comfortably want to spend the whole day there curled up with your favorite book, playing chess, or catching up with a friend.
Whether you’re looking for a worldly brew or an eclectic tea selection, Tanner’s has you covered. I actually had trouble deciding on whether or not I wanted to go with a South American roast or a fruity black tea from how extensive their list was. The Tropical Iced Black Tea was my jam in the moment and let’s just say that I was woken up within the first few sips. Being that Tanner’s is in my own backyard I can absolutely see myself becoming a regular there in the very near future. I’m definitely ready to embrace their slogan “Meet me...

Still trying to recover from my disappointment with Two Guns yesterday, I was greeted yet again today with bad coffee; well it wasn't truly bad, but it wasn't great either. Hanging around west today, I visited Tanner's Coffee Co. in Culver City per Yelp's 4-stars and 274 reviews of the place. What could go wrong, right? Burnt iced latte, apparently! The sign by the registered said they were brewing Peruvian beans for their lattes. Now, I've been to Peru and have had lattes there and believe me, this tasted nothing like it! Unfortunately, this just didn't hit the spot for me. My coffee-partner-in-crime ordered a blended mocha, which he seemed to enjoy. I took a sip of it myself, and felt there was way too much chocolate- it might as well have been a chocolate blended drink.
If you don't mind the "okay" coffee, the venue itself is a place where you can bring your laptop, enjoy their wifi, and hang out on one of their seating arrangements. They also have a few games you can play while you're there- I noticed chess and dominos. You can also find used books scattered around the place- for your enjoyment while you sip on...
