The people here are rude and will talk down to you. The server called me “sweetheart” a number of times. I could not hear well while inside and when I spoke louder I was told “not to yell”. I originally walked into the business to use the bathroom. There do not seem to be any public bathrooms and the museum that we planned to visit was closed (they are closed on Monday and Tuesday). I was told that I had to buy something to use the bathroom. Isn’t that illegal?
Edited after owner’s response: In many states it is illegal to deny access to a bathroom. The ADA also states that it is illegal to deny access to a bathroom to someone with a disability. I have a disability and did not discuss this with your server but she also never asked if I had a disability or an emergency. I am not from this area and I have never been to the restaurant before so I did not know the rules for using the bathroom. The server was extremely curt with me and I neither used bad language, nor did I threaten anyone. As a customer and a reviewer of your services, I am saddened by these accusations. If the server believed that I used foul language or threatened her, she should have refused service at that moment and sent me out. No server should have to put up with either of those situation. Instead, the server forced me to purchase something in order to use the bathroom and then she gave me the combination to the bathroom. When I returned from the bathroom, I asked her for my water and then she started to get mad at me for my language (I thought she was mad that I spoke Spanish when another employee was also speaking Spanish) and then she yelled at me, "You don't have to talk to me like that!" I just looked at her confused because I had no idea what she was talking about.
Your server showed me no compassion, and she may not understand that calling someone twice your age “sweetheart” is extremely insulting. Your business has admitted to keeping the doors locked because of the homeless people in the area. I am not homeless and this policy of not allowing someone to use the facilities in an emergency shows the business' lack of compassion for the people who happen to be downtown. There are a lot of people who visit this area from out of town.
What is funny (maybe a little sad) is that if she had been compassionate toward me and let me go to the bathroom without being condescending or mean, I would have happily stayed there for lunch and this review would have been very different. I realize that you need to “save face” with future patrons and people reading this by saying such horrible things about me. That says a lot about you, your business, and it saddens me. I pray that neither you nor your family runs into the same situation out there that I ran into in...
Read moreLocated in the heart of the tourist triangle (Reunion Tower, Dallas Aquarium, Convention Center), Chimalma offers a great Mexican dining experience.
Ambiance and Service The name “Chīmalmā” means “shield barrier,” symbolizing the restaurant’s role as a protector of great food and traditions. The tastefully done decor and welcoming bar create a warm and inviting atmosphere. The service was very attentive, and the extensive drink and food options are sure to satisfy any palate.
Food Enmoladas: These are similar to enchiladas but with a mole sauce instead. Mole can be an acquired taste, but when done right, it’s a burst of flavor. This was exactly our experience here.
Torta Ahogada: Also known as the “drowned sandwich,” this dish features bread pre-dipped in a savory sauce and combined with a large burger-like sandwich. The sauce was a bit much for my taste, so I would ask for it on the side next time.
Barbacoa Taco: The unique tortilla flavor paired with the juicy, tender meat made this dish a standout.
Michelada: The michelada was excellent, featuring the classic mix of clamato juice, lime, and Tajín.
Overall Experience Chimalma offers authentic food inspired by the Guadalajara region. If you’re in the mood for Tex-Mex, you might find a dish or two, but the true highlight here is the traditional Mexican cuisine and the drink offerings, such as their margaritas.
Flip Side: The prices can be a bit high, likely due to the touristy downtown area. However, they do offer daily specials under $10, providing a more budget-friendly option.
Overall, Chimalma is a great spot for those looking to explore authentic Mexican flavors in a welcoming and...
Read moreRestaurant is right across from JKF Plaza. Restaurant itself had a great fresh look not your typical Mexican restaurant places.
We ordered the trio for our appetizer...the guacamole was so delicious maybe the best I've had!!
If you are extremely hungry and expect unlimited chips and salsa, this is not your place at all! It's very bougie and modern twist to Mexican.
The food was delicious. Being a vegetarian, not much you can eat. I would have never tried anything with pineapple, but my tacos were great once I added the sauces from my trio. They give you complimentary soup with your meal.
Portions are small for the price if you are hungry! Our tour lady across the street told us about the best coleslaw in town...it was marinated cabbage..not the best.
If you want different then this is your place. If you want portions and typical then find somewhere else to eat.
Restaurant and restrooms were clean, waitress was sweet, and the food...
