I found out about this spot because we were driving through Dallas, and I asked my wife to search for Jamaican cuisine. She found it on Google. They also had great reviews and lots of user pictures, so we decided to drive and check them out. Luckily, it's not too far from I35E.
My experience finding the location was difficult. I couldn't figure out how to find him exactly because there was no signage; thankfully, other reviewers speaking and giving directions persuaded me not to give up. My wife called Chef Rich, and he eventually sent someone out. To show where exactly inside the apartments he was cooking at. At the time I visited, it was around 6pm and already dark.
When I finally got inside, my first impression was that this gonna be like Jamaican cuisine in an intimate kitchen. Think hibachi style where you, sir, and watch you out good being cooked. See the included picture for more context. It was like being in the "back of the house" in a restaurant and in the kitchen. Chef Rich had a couple of customers ahead of me. However, he was pretty close to wrapping up their meal. I had to wait about 10 minutes for him to start the meal.
Chef Rich doesn't have a menu, so if you're not familiar with Jamaican cuisine, you'll have to ask him. I decided to order two entrees, oxtails, and curry goat. My side options were the plantain bread, fried plantains, and veggies.
The curry goat had a good flavor and was very tender. I was pleased with the tenderness and flavor. It didn't have heavy curry gravy (think Indian curry) on it. The curry goat was light. However, I recommend the curry goat. My veggies didn't hold up well on the trip home, so I couldn't eat them because they were too soggy. A bed of rice probably would have alleviated this. My plantain bread also got soggy; thankfully, it was only part of it. I didn't like it, because I would have liked fried plantain bread to be sweeter, but this may just be preference and expectations since I'm used to fried plantains being sweet. Some of the fried plantains I got were sweet, and some weren't. Overall, the curry goat was good and plentiful, the goat can be very bony, so just be aware of this: I had a few pieces that were like this. I would like to try this dish again with the rice.
The oxtails were good as well and very tender and plentiful serving-wise. I had the same issues with the sides as I did with the curry goat. The oxtail gravy was delicious. Chef Rich did state he doesn't use browning in his oxtails, which is burnt sugar used as seasoning. Some use it to cook oxtails. Gravy is better in rice than on veggies, this is how they got soggy.
Chef Rich did throw in a sample of jerk chicken And his freshly made pineapple ginger juice. The juice is excellent. If you like pineapple and ginger, give it a try. I thought it was a nice balance flavors-wise and it didn't have any added sugars.
The jerk chicken has a nice flavor, I particularly like his jerk sauce. It was different than the traditional jerk sauce, but still spicy. My chicken tasted grilled but didn't have a deep smoked flavor. However, I really thought the jerk chicken was good; the jerk sauce is a must-try. The chicken was tender, cooked well, and well-seasoned. I recommend this.
Lastly, I purchased a slice of carrot cake, which was very tasty and delicious; this is a must-try if you like cake. The cake was moist and rich in flavor. The icing was sweet with a smooth texture.
With all things considered, I appreciated Chef Rich's customer service; if you have issues, let him know, and he will do his best to accommodate you; he's passionate about his cooking and wants to please. The food is also delicious and cooked fresh to order with generous portions. The prices of curry goat ($25) and oxtails ($30) were in line with today's market prices. Definitely support Chef Rich if you're in the area. I recommend calling ahead and placing your order. Chef Rich's customer service is also top-notch!m he made me feel like he valued my choosing to...
Read moreRich Lynn I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Lynn Rich food truck. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the oxtail with plantain bread and was impressed with the outstanding taste of the doubles made out of plantain’s. The doubles ( delicious snack from Trinidad consisting of fried flatbreads and channa & a spicy chickpea curry) made with plantains was soft chewy full of flavor without being overpowering. The oxtails were a tad bit on the sweet side, but very savory tender and fall off the bone cooked. But the cherry on the top was the cabbage mix. I’ve not had such tasty Caribbean cabbage since my last visit to the West Indies. It was not overcooked and soggy, but crispy and fresh with stubble flavor. Perfecto! Overall I’d give this 4 1/2 to 5 stars. The customer service was outstanding. I called my order in, and the gentleman was courteous, patient and friendly as well as helpful. I’ve lived in Dallas for over 20 years and this is the very best food/customer service I’ve had thus far with a Caribbean restaurant. It hit the mark in every category . Food = great. Prices= great . Customer service = great. The only draw back is the availability which I’m certain will change with more business. Four days out of the week is great but 7 out of 7 would make this outstanding. I have high hopes that this will move from a food truck to a restaurant in the near future as it has all the making in putting other Caribbean restaurants to shame. I’ve hit them all and nothing compares to Lynn Rich thus far! I’d like to see more food options in the near future…but the present menu still stands tall. Keep up the good work. …it traditional Caribbean food with an upscale flare…definitely not the average Caribbean food that surrounds...
