Satisfaction guaranteed? No. Customer service? No S'mores Ice Cream that tastes like COFFEE? HARD YES! Canned response to a 1-star review? Incoming
Let’s talk about Jeni’s S’mores ice cream, which, please sit down, tastes like COFFEE. Not chocolate. Not marshmallow. Not graham cracker. COFFEE. Like the best part of waking up is "Folgers in your cup" COFFEE.
You can ask anyone between the ages of 4 and 99, about “S’more” and they will immediately become nostalgic and picture campfires, gooey marshmallows, melted chocolate, graham crackers, fall nights, and family get togethers. What no one pictures is a steaming cup of ARTISAN ROAST.
Like any sane person, I thought it was a mistake. I brought the uneaten ice cream, with a couple small bites, back to the counter, ( I took a picture so I don't get into a He ate the whole thing and he's just trying to get free ice cream situation.) and said, “Hey, I think I got the wrong flavor. This tastes like coffee.” The employee replied, “That’s the smoky flavor we’re going for.”
Smoky? No. COFFEE? Absolutely. S’mores? Not even close.
I asked to get another scoop. She went and got me another scoop and then tried charging me again for a new scoop. I told her I was dissatisfied and her logic for why I was wrong and I did not deserve an exchange, is DRUMROLL, please .... I should have sampled it first.
Why would I sample S’mores? I know what S’mores taste like. Or at least I thought I did. I expected marshmallows, chocolate, and graham cracker and got STARBUCKS.
Also the employee told me Jeni’s has no satisfaction guarantee. . No refund, no exchange, just vibes and a firm ”OK" when you’re disappointed. For eight dollars for two half scoops, I expected at least mild concern.
As a side note the honey vanilla was excellent, but not excellent enough to make up for the “S’mores” debacle and the complete lack of customer care.
Next time, I’ll stick...
Read moreI love Jeni's Ice Cream and I was excited to see one opening kinda near us. This is a brand new location is what is called The District. The only other thing open in the plaza is 50 West Brewery. I think this will be a cool location once more things open up. Parking is confusing, but there is a big lot near 50 West. Finding the shop was also confusing since construction is still happening. Luckily they had a big orange flag to point out where Jeni's is. The shop is small, but cute. There is a nice outdoor area. Lots of different ice cream options. I was there for a Yelp event so myself and one other person got a signature (3 scoops) for free. It will cost you $15 otherwise. They have some good GF/DF options, which is nice, but not a lot of both. I had the DF Lemon Bar since the war currently the only other GF option too. It had a great flavor. Not too lemony, but just enough. My friend went with the DF Lemon Bar, Citrus Glazed Pound Cake, and a Passion fruit flavor. She thought they all were really good. She liked the Lemon Bar and passion fruit the best. She said the Citrus Glazed Pound Cake was just a little too cake heavy. The person working was great. Very personable and kind. Definitely happy to have another ice cream place...
Read moreI wasn't much of a fan the first time I tried a Jeni's (in Columbus, OH), but giving them a second (and third) chance at this location changed my opinion. They have a good variety of interesting flavors -- not what you see everywhere. I appreciate the gooey butter flavor (as a former St. Louisan); I'll rate that one 7/10. The salted pb chocolate was a solid 8/10. Buttercream birthday cake was probably my favorite of all I've tried. Double dough was my least favorite -- not bad, you just have to really love brown sugar, because the flavor comes through very strongly. They have good smooth-textured ice cream, with nice chunks in most of their flavors to add another layer of texture. Another thing that sets them apart from your average shop is their waffle cones. They're not just for show; they have a nice buttery flavor to them that adds to the experience. I guess...
