Fushi Yami – First Visit Review (DeKalb, IL) I recently tried Fushi Yami in DeKalb for the first time and overall, I had a pretty good experience with a few things to note. I ordered the Godzilla Roll, which came with eight pieces for about $11. The roll was very tasty—fresh, well-made, and satisfying. I really enjoyed the flavor combination and the texture. My only wish is that it had been topped with some eel sauce to elevate it even more. But even without it, it was still solid and flavorful. I also got a four-piece crab rangoon (labeled as “crab raccoon” on the menu), which cost $4.50. This was where I was a little disappointed. The flavor was actually pretty good, but the container they used for it trapped a lot of moisture. I didn’t eat it right away—waited about 10 minutes until I got home—and by then, they were soggy and had lost that crispy texture that makes crab rangoon so good. A more ventilated container or something to prevent the steam buildup would’ve made a big difference. As for how I eat my sushi, I like dipping it in soy sauce with a little bit of wasabi, and I always top each bite with some of the pickled ginger. I know ginger is usually used to cleanse your palate between bites, but I like the flavor it adds when paired with the sushi directly. This was my first time trying Fushi Yami, and despite the minor setback with the crab rangoon, I’ll definitely be back. The sushi was fresh, the price was reasonable, and the overall quality was impressive for a local spot. Looking forward to trying more rolls in the future—especially if I can get some eel sauce next time!

I have been here infrequently when I need sushi or noodles but cant make it across town to Omi Sushi or Tako Sushi. Ordering is at the counter even if you are dining in. In my opinion the sushi here is a bit lower quality feeling than the rolls that can be gotten elsewhere in town. The fish doesnt seem as high quality. The price is a little overpriced for the quality of the baaic sushi rolls unfortunately. The price of their bubble milk tea is incredibly high, and gets even higher if you want to "add" the tapioca to it. The taro flavor tastes more milky than other bubble tea im used to, but it is one of the few places in town that sells it so they can exploit the pricing for now. However, they have the most variety on their menu compared to any of the other similar places in town and lots of options for bundles or party platters and have the longest operating hours and are open on Sundays. Their online menu on their website is pretty extensive and does a good job outlining what their combos have to offer. Their noodles are acceptable quality for the price. I have not tried Nami noodles in town to compare, but we were surprised by the quality of their udon noodles and ramen noodles (ramen is on Wednesdays). I look forward to exploring more of their menu in the future. My favorite sushi combo so far is the salmon dream combo. They let you substitute the spicy mayo for normal mayo for free if you prefer it not spicy ❤️

Fushi Yami is one of those spots that doesn’t try too hard—and that’s exactly why it works. Tucked off Lincoln Highway, it’s got a no-frills vibe, but the food speaks for itself. The hibachi is consistently solid—steak and shrimp are my go-to—and the sushi rolls hit the sweet spot between fresh and flavorful. The Crazy Roll? Wild in the best way. Ordering feels more fast-casual than sit-down, which throws some people off, but once you dig in, you get it. The portions are generous, prices are fair, and the fried rice deserves its own fan club. Service can be hit or miss—some staff are super friendly, others seem like they’re counting down the minutes—but the owner’s usually around and genuinely cares. It’s the kind of place where you can try something new every time or stick to your comfort order and never be disappointed. Not fancy, not fussy—just good food that hits the spot when you need it. Whether you’re grabbing lunch between errands or settling in for a casual dinner, Fushi Yami delivers. Bonus points for easy parking and fast turnaround.

This was my first time ever eating here. We placed our order on the kiosk and picked a table. Tables did not seem to get wiped down very often. I personally would get rid of the robot they have that brings your food out cause it honestly seems like a waste of time. Also it's very unappetizing to see your food brought out by a robot who has trays covered in food and haven't been wiped down. Food should not be brought out on a dirty tray! Our appetizer came out before our drink and then we received our two sushi rolls this all seemed to happen in the first 10 minutes of being there. The sushi was just ok. Not long after our sushi came out one of the girls working there asked how everything was, and we told her we were still waiting on our steak fried rice which was no big deal at the time. We assumed she probably went and said something to the kitchen to check on it. Roughly 20 minutes later after finishing the food that was brought out to us, and seeing multiple people who placed their order after us receive all their food including fried rice as well. I figured maybe we better say something cause they might have forgotten about our food. We went up and asked politely how much longer for our fried rice and we were told generally 15 minutes. After another 10 to 15 minutes of waiting and having said something twice we went up and asked again and it was very clear our order had been forgotten about and didn't get made. The girl we talked to was the same girl who we first mentioned we were still waiting on the rest of our order when our sushi came out. She then brought out some guy I assume was a manager and I asked for a refund on the fried rice. It seemed like a very big waste of my time sitting for almost a hour after already finishing my food and waiting for the rest of our order and then finding out we basically sat there for nothing. Next time I will take my business elsewhere. If the owner wants proof id be more than happy to email a copy...

After a horrible first experience with Fushi Yami back in 2020 I was accused of stealing food by the owner when I called because the delivery I had was missing half the order.

In hopes things were better now I tried them twice. The first time, I ordered a delivery an order with a bubble tea, the tea was missing the bubbles it was just the liquid. So I was scammed out of money there. Then today I made a delivery order and I waited 45 minutes after my delivery was supposed to be delivered. It never was. According to the woman who answered the phone the phone number I gave them was wrong and the delivery person could not reach me. First, the number they had is not a number I know or use. Second, why did the delivery person not come into my building as the delivery note instructed? I gave a very detailed note as to what office I was in and how to get there. Som the delivery person did not even follow instructions. After finding out my food had been out for delivery for 45 minutes already the man on the phone told me it was still safe to eat. So, the restaurant encourages poor food safety standards. I asked for a refund and he gave me a hard time but after telling him I would reverse the charges with my bank he refunded me.

After each and every opportunity give to them a chance to redeem my interest in them. I can guarantee I will never visit this restaurant ever again. I will stick with Omi Sushi which has by far better service and food...
