Having moved here from NYC, I really wanted to love this place. I love good matzoh ball soup, brisket, pastrami, kasha, and knishes. One time I went with 8 neighbors. The food was great and after the meal, we paid the bill at the table, but then went in to the shop side to buy some stuff to take home - all of us picked out things from babka to Dr. Brown sodas, but the person at the checkout was dealing with a take-out customer who was asking endless questions about nutrition, ingredients, and cooking style. The other person behind the counter was basically idle while the 8 of us waited at least five minutes with no movement. All of us put the items back on the shelf and left without buying.
On another occasion, I went in with my partner about an hour before closing time and we ordered soup in a pot and brisket in a pot. We waited at least 45 minutes for the food to come out, with not a peep from the waiter as to why it was taking so long. There was no apology or explanation, and we were about 30 minutes late to our next appointment.
With guests at our house, I decided to do take-out. We ordered chicken in a pot with matzoh ball, brisket in a pot, and maybe a few sides. When I got home, I went to serve everything and saw that there were no matzoh balls in the soup. In the restaurant, the soup was full of yummy stuff, but the take-out was clear with just a little debris on the bottom, and of course, no matzoh balls. Major disappointment.
The most recent time, after being seated, it took almost five minutes before a server came to the table. 5 minutes may not be long, but depending on who you are sitting with, that can be an eternity. Pickles never came and we had to ask for them. We ordered a Reuben and a few knishes. The knishes came out cold and chewy. That's a major disappointment since a potato knish usually has a hot crusty outer shell with hot mashed potatoes inside. A kasha knish was also tepid at best.
I've noticed a trend where the wait staff congregates by the order entry computers to chat, when we keep hoping they would come to the table and refill water, give us an update, or even bring another Dr. Brown's soda.
All in all, I will still go back there with hopes that either an owner or someone from management will read this post and take note that there are issues. I am in retail and every penny that goes in my POS helps the business, so if you have someone working the POS who can't figure out how to put a high-maintenance customer on hold for a moment while they take care of 8 customers with money-in-hand, you should change them ASAP (that experience was about a month after you opened in RB). If it's going to take an eternity for the food, please let the customer know why. Please check on the customers right from the get-go. Please make sure all the food is done with the highest quality - knishes are a trademark and if the person is just throwing them in a microwave to heat them up, it's not a good representation of a knish - it will be chewy. When we did have the brisket in a pot, it was over-the-top delicious as was the chicken in a pot, but the take-out person has one chance to make it right, and they messed up our order by omitting the critical matzoh balls. By the time that's discovered, it's too late to go back and fix it.
My rating of 3 stars is because, when the food is GOOD, it is fantastic, but when the service (whether wait staff or at the shop) is poor, it really offsets the food. Best of luck and I'll be back...
Read moreWe made our first trip to Rosenfeld‘s on Thursday of this week, right before Memorial Day weekend. We were specifically at the Rosenfeld‘s Deli in Rehoboth. I totally agree with the review that stated how confusing and unclear it was to know who was waiting, how to place an order, which line to be in, ask a question (forget it!) etc. The staff was identified by their Rosenfeld T-shirts, but they so ignored everyone that was in there it was hard to believe that they actually worked there. There was one man and 2 middle-aged women working and when they did finally acknowledge a customer they were rude and condescending. All three of them. Definitely made you feel like if you didn’t know the system, you might as well just leave empty-handed, because it appeared that would be fine with them. I debated leaving when I saw one of the women open up the counter with the cannolis, etc. in it, reach her bare hands in with no gloves or paper, pull out a few cannolis, put them in a to-go box and then close the lid (something I would’ve been uncomfortable with even pre-Covid) but for some reason that in looking back I just can’t understand, we decided we would overcome the staff's attitude, and we eventually placed our order at the counter.
As for the food, the rainbow cookies we bought looked beautiful, but unfortunately were tasteless and we ended up throwing them away. The carrot cake was a very generous portion but unfortunately after taking it home and having a few bites, it was disposed of in the trash as well. The one-pound eclair, however, was everything we had hoped for, and is the reason we went there in the first place.
To be fair I would consider giving them one more try for the food, but I’m skeptical that this was a one time, terrible horrible no good very bad day for the entire counter-side staff. And I must say that in reading the reviews and many of the comments by the owner at the Rehoboth location, I can’t support businesses with people that treat customers so unkindly. Times are hard for everyone, and if someone patronizes your business I would think you would want to welcome them rather than disrespect them, both with your actions and your words, in person and in print.
Just my observation...
