Very excited for the new Taco Rio digs, but waited 2 months to make sure they were squared away. (Previous visit to the truck at Holland Glade was very disappointing with small dried out carnitas tacos.)The transformation from the old BK is nothing short of amazing. Great music, comfortable seating, love the glass garage doors for open air in nice weather. Many kudos for the design and vibe!
For dine in, you're required to order by QR code which is a royal pia. We were immediately diverted to sit down, and not go near the counter. All I wanted was to order a taco & water, but I had to provide name address , and all kinds of other information (& my 1st born?) bc you have to register an account online. After being frustrated with all the interrogation-- because we were so hungry and just wantedtoeatdammit, I backed out of the order and started over as a guest. Also wanted to pay cash but turns out they ONLY accept credit cards! Few issues with the ordering, for instance I just wanted water, not bottled water but tap water. There's no way to get that.
The two of us had ordered a bowl, and three different flavor tacos in total. I guess they just assumed that one person was eating all three tacos because they came all smushed together in one container, that we had to share. Queso fries were interesting in a good way, but were definitely missing the chilis, (so don't worry if you don't like spicy things). Having an option to add some spice or heat (via chilis or salsa) to the fries would be nice instead of just bland cheese. (Next time we'll skip those.)
BF loved his short rib bowl. Tacos were very wet, and pretty much impossible to eat by hand. Juicy tacos are good but soaking wet tacos in a puddle are not. One of them was super salty. They have a Sonoran/Mexican style hot dog on the menu that sounds delish, definitely will try that instead next time with fingers crossed.
Skip the Maine sodas, usually one of my favorite brands. Both our drinks were nothing more than water, with no negligible flavor. How does that happen? Definitely a waste of 6 bucks. Lunch was $40 for 2 (w/ no alcohol), a bit pricey for a quick lunch but unfortunately becoming typical for Rehoboth.
All in all, I want to see this place succeed. They still need to do some tweaking, I know they're trying to streamline things to make it easy. But sometimes people just want to order at the counter so they can see & get what they want. And some of us yes, still pay with real green paper,...
Read moreSERVICE: My experience with this restaurant was very mediocre. Because it was my first time, I did not know how the ordering system was set up. Hosts were only approachable when I initiated the conversation. There was no welcoming atmosphere or guidance on what I needed to do.
After waiting at the table for 20 minutes, I then approached the server at the register, and she was very nice. For the future, I recommend for a server to welcome individuals in and provide guidance on where they need to go;especially when the amount of customers were low.
FOOD: The food was very Swifty-Americanized. I understand the concept of Tex Mex because I am from the Midwest. The flavors were not there though. The corn tortillas were very cold ( should be grilled), and it taste as though it was bought out of the freezer section of Dollar Tree. The protein that I ordered was very bland and tasteless ( fish and shrimp), and the tacos were made with laziness and lack of cultural appreciation. It had a school cafeteria taste.
If it was a busy day, I understand completely but standards is standards. Don't invoke a product that you cannot maintain standards for even after a long day of work. Stick to cold cuts if that is the case ( respectfully). The portion, ingredients and the presentation of the tacos were on the level of a kid's Lunchable during a elementary school picnic. The price was too much for that product. I believe it can get better.
The Nachos taste and presentation were equivalent to the level of a low quality movie theater brand with vegetables. For the price of the nachos, I was expecting to have a protein offered with the nachos. It was an additional charge. I recommend including a protein with the nachos and bulking them up just a little bit. Especially for the price you are charging.
The nachos were lacking cilantro, citrus and savory elements. I was embarrassed eating them. I wouldn't give them to a five year old. But I believe these nachos can get better in time. With a little more effort.
Overall, the atmospheric experience was very Delaware. I did not feel my senses were transported into another place; especially when this is a Neo-Mexican based cuisine. The colors were very nice, the employees were very nice upon approaching them, and the view reminded me that I lived in Delaware. I appreciate the effort. We all have off nights, and that's why we take critiques and...
Read moreWe came in here after a long day at the beach and had been looking forward to trying it all day after looking over a bunch of photos earlier. The food looked amazing and originally being from California we were excited to see tacos that looked more street style than some other horrifying "Mexican" food we've had in Ohio where we currently reside.
Upon entering we were greeted by a staff member who appeared to be working the drive-thru as he was wearing a headset. He asked us where we'd like to be seated while holding menus and turned his head and spoke so quietly that we have no idea what was even said. We could tell that he was motioning towards a few different tables so we assumed he was asking us where we'd like to sit. I pointed at a booth that was open that we'd like and he just handed us the menus rather than walking us to the booth. Right off the bat I thought this was weird since it was apparently table service.
The booth I chose had some food on it, used napkins, a soda cup, and someones receipt on it but I just figured they'd send someone over to the clear the table for us. We sat and waited for a few minutes while going over the menu trying to decide what to order and still no one came by to clear the table or even introduce themselves to get our drink orders.
We ended up waiting 5 mins before getting up and leaving because if they couldn't bother to communicate clearly, clean a table, or take our drink orders within that amount of time then clearly we were in for a bad experience.
It was definitely a bummer since we were all looking forward to eating here and I'm sure given the good ratings that the food would've been good but on that particular night things just weren't rolling smoothly. I don't know if they were slammed or what, and unfortunately I'll probably never find out otherwise since we were here on a vacation.
Edit: Sorting through the reviews by new and I'm seeing lots of similar reviews within the past month. Looks like there are lots of staffing issues here as of late and the waitstaff are in dire need of...
